Open Up

Opportunities don’t always come and knock on the door,                                        landscape 3

Usually, they present themselves as a challenge.

Today was the church garage sale, we do one, once and  sometimes twice a year

As I watched people arrive, park and saunter over to the tables, I wished I had ..  more time to say Hello, Hi!, So nice that you could drop by…..

But of course, there was little time for anything but to keep putting stuff out and answering the many questions being asked by the eager early arrivals.

Church staff were kept busy, putting stuff out, or helping with things being purchased.  There was a steady stream of new arrivals.
here are several reasons our church does a garage sale, and yes it is to raise    money for the church… but it is also to meet the many people who drop in to       visit us  each year, and to get acquainted with them

What I realized today, was that the opportunity was there, but the reality was, we were not staffed to properly achieve the part about.. getting reacquainted  having time to actually visit and say hello to the visitor who dropped in.

So… did we really accomplish what we set out to do?  The opening our doors to say Hello and  meet new people… That was/is an important part of our intended goal.  Sometimes even when we are proactive, it isn’t till we actually play out the steps that we have scheduled and planned, that we are able to see the discrepancies.

hmmm time to rethink, how to “open up”

communication 2015

0d41485561a37c6865761f503975eb84With the technology in our lives today the need to have a telephone available in public places has all but disappeared. Interesting to note though, that in some remote areas, or smaller villages cell phones and internet access is not always easily obtained.   Yet, because of the lack of use .. the public phones are fast becoming non-existent. Heaven forbid you get stuck along a country road between communication towers, or in a deep valley with a lot of mountain between you and the air waves needed to work your cell.

40870a6d01987ff9525864f6e721ac64With central air, and many controlled environments in public areas,, buildings, and newer housing complexes.  We don’t use windows like we used to.  Where at one time I knew many many co-workers and acquaintances who went to cottages and out into the rural areas for most of the summer… I don’t hear of that as much now. The back road summer havens are slowly finding less and less activety … the lakes and rivers are not humming with constant activity.

Yes, creative minds are still at work,  all around we see the creative mind at work.  We live in a society that says, individual rights and freedom of expression  is important.  AND it is.  However, there are times, when we should be looking at how our needs/wants affect others.  AND we should care.It isn’t always about what we  want, I appreciate and enjoy looking at the above bed, do I want to sleep in or on it, no.  Everyone around us, is a unique human being, yet they are all part of who we are… they share the same air, they think and feel emotions, hurts, love, sadness, just like we do.

cliffs of Moher,County ClareSome will want to walk along a path that will mystify and rattle your nerves,  Yet hearing about their journey and seeing the world through their eyes, is WoW… exciting.  You can share the experience, just not in the same way..

Yoho National Park,CanadaThis is an experience I would like to one day explore.  For years I would drive by a frozen waterfall, and wonder what it would be like to climb the frozen sculpture I passed it 5 days a week, going to and coming home from work.  I’ve not done it yet, but it remains a goal.  I may never get to actually climb such a might fall as this one, but never-the-less I keep the desire alive by sharing the passion and exhilaration of those who can and have….  Modern technology is such that today, I can easily find and enjoy a glimpse into what someday might happen.

Never stop believing in your dreams.  Have faith.

Time was

987a75aafae57d975db1cf0fa88c5b75

Time was…. when we all gathered to listen, learn and enjoy the experience of sharing new products, new techniques, new ideas.   Then we would have time to process the information with an informal gathering around a light refreshment table…

Having worked in a large teaching hospital, I often got to speak in such rooms, lecture rooms, or auditorium.  Talking to the assembled group, I could watch their faces, and body language, I often knew the ones who would be full of questions, and interested to know more.    lt was fun, we all got to know more about the other person, and we could talk right then and there about what we had seen or heard.

Now I’m told that often if there are still such rooms in use,  the audience is head down with technology that allows them to be miles away, even if they are sitting in the room with you.    Often there is little dialogue between the group, rather questions are asked and answered online,   Therefore others in the room do  not benefit from the exchange.

Time was when we could help one another because as individuals we all see and think in our own unique way.  Often, a different view point leads to a greater indepth understanding of a topic or situation… and in some cases, makes us even more comfortable and confident with our own decision, and chosen path.

Time was, and time is… always going to be changing.  we exists today because of the past. Today in the PL churches across the world we are celebrating Ancestor’s Day.  It is a time we have where through ceremony we express our gratitude for the love and virtues of our ancestors… Services on the 11th. are at 10 a.m.. We know people cannot always attend at that time of day.. closing your eyes for a moment and silently sharing our prayer, goes a long way in bringing a peaceful moment to your day. =^_^=

Whatever it is that draws you today, embrace the moment and make it  yours.  Too often we are so bent on the destination, we do not enjoy or make time to be in the NOW.

Dearest Perpetual Friend:

I sat in meditation/prayer this morning,

what a joy, words fail me.

It was like the rush of a fiery sunset,

or the awe when you first view the ocean

in ll its majestic splendour.

I gazed upon the rocky mountain range,

felt the cool crisp freshness of the clean mountain air.

I travelled on to our island in the sky,

wandering over the trails,

I sat on the beaches and felt the sands

beneath my feet, while I watched the playful white caps

come  rolling in.

What beautiful moments to share,
the pure tranquility that is ours,

when we take the time to BE.

In meditation, one transcends,

it is like a mirror

You are very much a part of me,

for without you, there is no me.

It is in meditation, that we shall cross over

becoming One with the Universe…………………….Q

Spain, Asturias,Covadonga  High above the clouds

a castle sat, built of stone and made to last

when perched on a chair by a window

we could look out and see forever….

Looking down we saw the town around

and people going about their daily lives

me, sometimes you, and even we two

could sit for hours and enjoy the view

But what  was there for us to do

when not with you, I sat alone

sitting, staring, but not sharing

Are the people below any different

as the go about, do they look up and wonder

what we are doing up here high in the sky

Scotland,Highlands In my cottage by the sea

the coming home is always such s joy

we seem our home. nestled  there,

with the water, hills and valleys

as for as the eye can see

We get to hear the water grumble when it storms

and see the clouds roll in to turn the sky
from blue to gray

Our time is measured by the natural

flow of morning light to end of day.

We know we are not alone,

we see the cars drive by

even the odd hiker will stop to say “hi..”

Yet, we often wonder,

would life be different if we were not by the sea…

Guess what… we all need food to nourish our bodies, and each and every one of us, has our own food preferences.  The same applies to our spiritual needs, we are all wanting to find, love, peace, and tranquility in our days/nights. We each need to travel our own paths to towards this goal.  But what is the common in thread in all of us, big, small, tall, short, whatever, is the love we give ourselves.

Yesterday was a wonderful day

I’m sorry I missed my time with you

I knew you would understand

Friends and I, were out on a drive exploring

and simply enjoying the day

Seeing the sights and getting to know each other more

Life would be such a bore,

if we didn’t make time to play

The beauty and wonder of it all

Is that my friends are from Japan,

I got to show them a small part of Canada

and experience their delight in viewing my homeland

Morrisburg, on St Lawrence River.

We got as far as the St. Lawrence River,

where we could stand, and they could see

our closest neighbour, the United States of America

Farmer’s fields were newly sewn, some early crops were to be seen

Everything was green, as far as the eyes could see

Language barriers vanished when the sharing

was the visual all around  us

and that Life is Art

Rev. Atsushi, Rev. Mamoru and I had a exquisite day yesterday

we put our full Makoto (heart/sincerity)  into what we did

the day will be a memory that will last for a very long time

In sharing it with you, we hope that it

will bring a smile to your day.

Green

 Green

the subtle shades of green

weave a gentle pattern through my dream…

Green

my body stirs, as I sense the life around me

birds sing, a squirrel chatters from a tree

and a ray of sunshine finds its way to my face

what is this place

so, calm, so surreal

I know it is part of me, for I am totally

embraced by the beauty

and serenity that gracefully permeates

my total being….

this moment, this time in space

it is real, it is not a dream,

it is my communion with God

the bonding and reconnection

to what is real

The Secret. by Q

wisteria

Lucky Monkey bowed her head and listened to the birds calling back and forth to each other.  She wondered if Bending Willow had heard her just now as he had entered the courtyard.  The day was coming to an end, yet she could still feel the warmth of th lingering sun on her shoulders.

She knew that she shouldn’t be there, if she was found in the garden her Father would be furious with her.  Quietly she tipped toed to the vine-covered swings.  Her heart skipped a beat, would Laughing Bird be there she wondered.  Then she scolded herself for being silly.

Laughing Bird had been so serious when he had told her that if she wanted the secret of the whispering shells she had to meet him after evening prayers.  Little Monkey could still see his earnest face peering down into her eyes.  Just as she had been about to ask him if he meant what he was saying, Bending Willow had come and pulled her away, scolding her for talking to Laughing Bird.  Laughing Bird had been her constant companion till one day her Father had told her she was too old to be romping with the boys, she was now to focus on her studies.

Bending Willow was the same age as she was, her Mother was concubine to Little Monkey’s Father, and currently the favourite.  Little Monkey’s Mother, Shining Star had fallen from favour when she refused to consent to Little Monkey’s Father’ wish to bring hone another concubine.  Shining Star was No.1 wife, she did not wish another concubine in the home.

Fragrant Pearl, Bending Willow’s Mother had been understanding and had taken her master’s part in the quarrel.  Roaring Lion, Little Monkey’s brother had stood by his Mother, so Master Wu had not brought home his latest love.  He had been forced to rent a house on the other side of town.  He had not forgiven Shining Star and had stayed away for days and days.

Then one day, news had come that a stranger had come to the village and was looking for the husband of the woman known as Shining Star.  Little Monkey’s Father had called to him, they had met and talked for hours.  When the stranger left, Little Monkey’s Father had come home and gone straight to Shining Star’s quarters and begged to be forgiven.  He had brought with him a box carved in the finest ebony.  When Shining Star opened the box, her eyes had grown wide with wonder.

sea shells 2Leaning forward to get a better look she gave a small sigh and fainted.  In the box sat the prettiest of shells, beautifully sculpted by nature, from which came the faint whispering sounds of the sea.

There was a hush in the House of Wu.  Shining Star had not regained consciousness.  She slept an endless dream.  A smile played on her lips, her breath was sweet and pure, but she did not stir.

Little Monkey breathed a sigh of relief, Laughing Bird was sitting hidden under the heavy growth of the lush wisteria vine.

“So, Little Monkey you have come” he smiled up at her.

Seeing him sitting crossed legged his head resting on his hands she smiled remembering all the times they had st across from each other, each telling a secret trying to outdo the other.

“Oh Laughing Bird” cried Little Monkey, her hands reaching out to him, her eyes searching his face “yu know how sad I am that my Mother will not wake.  Tell me you were not teasing, do you really know the secret of the whispering shells?”

“Here, come sit beside me” Laughing Bird patted the ground beside him.  Remember when I told you that I saw your Father in the  village talking to the stranger from the big city?”

Little Monkey was sitting across from him, leaning forward so she could hear. She knew that she would have to let him tell her the story his way.   “Well do you remember?” Laughing Bird was looking at her intently. Her fragile beauty stirred his emotions, he held back his desire to reach out and touch her.

“Yes, yes I remember Laughing Bird, please tell me what you know” Little Monkey wondered if he was stalling for time. Why was he looking at her that way?

Laughing Bird began, “I saw Bending Willow and her Mother talking to the stranger before the stranger spoke to your Father”

Little Monkey could not believe her ears, “you what! you saw Bending Willow and Fragrant Pearl speaking with the stranger?”

“Yes, but not only that, there was another man there too, he was wearing a big ring that shone like the stars.  He carried a big black bag out of which he took a package.  I crept closer  trying to hear what they were saying but I could not get too close for fear that I would be heard.  By the time your Father arrived, Fragrant Flower, Bending Willow and the man with the ring were gone”  Laughing Bird paused, “this is the interesting part Little Monkey”  his voice dropped a pitch, she had to lean even closer so that she could hear. “I could see your Father was worried, he kept shaking his head, then suddenly Fragrant Flower and Bending Willow came back.  They began to talk to your Father, by their gestures they seemed to be reassuring him, they didn’t want the man to leave, they wanted your Father to take the package.  Finally your Father took the package and left with Fragrant Flower and Bending Willow.  Seeing my chance I went over to the stranger.”

chinese men

Little Monkey gasped, her little hands balled into fists “you, you went and talked to the stranger, but what did he say?”

“I told him that I was a friend of Master Wu’s daughter”

He said, “ah, so you know Little Monkey”

“Little Monkey, he knew your name! ”

Little Monkey could not speak, she looked at her friend in wonder, “then do you know what he said ” Laughing Bird seemed to expect  her to answer, but Little Monkey was too caught up to answer.  Laughing Bird leaned closer and whispered so quietly that she had to strain to hear

“Little Monkey, he said that your Mother’s spirit has gone into the shell.  If she is to return someone will have to reach her spirit in the shell.  When I asked what the package had been, he only laughed and said “son, you are young, you do not understand the ways of the old” then he laughed and turned to go.  I begged him to tell me about the whispering shells.”  Laughing Bird stopped, his eyes staring off into some far off place.

Chinese art

Little Monkey could not believe Laughing Bird’s timing, “yes YES? ” she tugged at his sleeve, “tell me please, this is not the time for your games, you know that I am listening to you, did he tell you what the secret is?”

“Laughing Bird do you hear me, please, did he tell you what the secret of the whispering shells is?”  Little Monkey was now leaning very close to Laughing Bird, yet even so she had to really listen when he spoke.

“The secret Little Monkey is .. love..”

“Love ?” Little Monkey said the word over and over, “..love.. what did he mean?”

“Laughing Bird, what is love, what has love to do with the whispering shells?”

I did my best not to edit, or correct, I simply retyped what I found.  I wrote this many years ago, finding it today, was a reminder to me that the Universe will give me answers, I need only listen, this time it gave it back to me in my own words.
