surroundings and your state of mind

farmyard animals

You all looking for something profound, you all just staring at me like I have something  to say.  I don’t really, but go on and look, cuz I’m looking back at you and wondering how the photographer got you all to stand that way.  If I could I would reach right in  there and scratch and nuzzle each one of you, cept the critter with the feathers. Never done hold one of those before.

Yea I know all the proof readers out there will be wondering if I fell out of bed.  I didn’t… but gall darn, I hang with some pretty “good to know” guys and gals who come from other places, and their lazy drawl and way of  speaking has rather grown on me.caring...

Why is it that when different species are left on their own to communicate and  bond, their need for closeness , their acceptance of physical and outward appearances, doesn’t bother them.

Walden

” I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. “  Henry D. Thoreau , Walden, Life in the Woods

We can’t all wander out into the backwoods, nor do we all live in areas where we can access a farmer’s field or woodland, but we all have special places where we can go to unwind and just enjoy quiet time with Nature.

“I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my sense put in tune once more”  John Burroughs

crumbling

stairs 1

We haves a similar ruin in the Gatineau Parks, not all that far from the city.  During the spring, summer and fall, people, locals, and tourists flock to the Gatineau Hills to enjoy a respite from the busy city and concrete.  Our winters can be brutally cold, and our summers extremely hot and humid.  We are blessed in living in an area that experiences each season in all of its glory. Whenever the season changes, the ruins take on a different look “feeling”.  In winter I wanted to snowshoe up to see them, but never did, You know the old expression, “could have, should have, didn’t”

abandoned -memories

This picture reminded me of when we used to visit on of my Mother’s aunts in the Muskoka area.  A city girl, it was something of a wonder for me when I first saw the little store, with the pumps outside to service the passing cars going into Algonquin Park. Canada is full of huge park lands and places where civilization hasn’t been able to clamour to and destroy wildlife and vegetation.  I had to be dragged kicking and sulking to go up there in the summer, once there, I would delight in the new discoveries I would find.  Jumping into water as crystal clear as one could find, while distant cousins jumped from the wooden bridge into deeper water.  The track we took to get to the stream was packed earth sand,we sat on rocks, and picked wild berries along the trails as we explored.  There was no other sounds except our childish banter, the birds, and what little traffic could be heard from the few passing cars in the distance.  There were  no radios we brought along, no cellphones,  just us and the outdoors.

nature and water

Yes of course, I’m older now, and seldom do I reminisce, yet there are times, like today, when a picture will pull a memory from my gray cells and I will relive an experience or moment, that happened a long time ago.  With the internet we all connect now in a very different way, and I am always pleased when I find that someone else has been experiencing similar flashbacks, and is sharing their story or visual memory in a photograph that in some way closely resembles  mine. then from ruins come rebirth, and I am refreshed.  Much like the walk in the forest along quiet trails when the world was not as busy.

Life events might crumble, buildings can be torn down or abandoned, but what is constant and always with us no matter what time of day or night, is the Universe.. No matter where we are, we will find Nature to view, to feel, to experience, Always, Nature is present, The Universe is open and available 24/7, we need only accept with an open and sincere heart what is before us.

sky and clouds

Love, true love, never dies, nor does it crumble away and fade to dust.  True caring, is the sharing of one’s heart and soul forever.

There are no restrictions, no demands, and no judgements ……….. it simply IS, no more…no less.

Bruce Lee

In my younger years, I remembered Bruce Lee as Kato, the actor who played along side the Green Hornet on a television show that I watched on the black and white telly we had, with the one station.  Being Chinese in Canada in years gone by meant you were a an oddity.  You stood out like a sore thumb and there was no way you could not know that you were “different:  from the other people in the community in which you lived.  My Father was a wise man who taught me to live life with appreciation. To accept and do my best to understand the difference we all have, and how unique each individual is.  By seeing those who taunted and rejected me without really knowing me, as a lesson, teachers of another side of a coin if you will. I learned to dismiss their actions as a part of who they were, and to move on.  These same youngsters were soon my playmates.  We are still in contact today.    I have been blessed with knowing that they feel that in getting to know me  they learned about an other culture and how it was a positive in their lives.

During the early years of my practice, martial arts became the “new fad”  The buzz was to take up a discipline and become another “Bruce Lee”.. It was always an honour for me when  young man/woman would come to my door asking for assistance in his/her developement.  NO I was not teaching a Martial Art technique, I was a teacher of the TAO, and worked with students and clients to help them deal with the daily stress they encountered in navigating their lives.

I soon learned that my childhood hero Kato, was Bruce Lee and that he had a lot of things to say about life.  I also learned that he had a huge following.  His wisdom,  dedication and focus on his craft was legendary.

bc3d9a0df3f80e6d654a0a48848454a8There has been so much written about him and his philosophy on life.  You can find all kinds of information by just typing in his name in a search engine, and reams of info will pop up.  I shared his thoughts with you today because so much of it is the wisdom of the TAO and the philosophy I was weaned on.  Asked the other day, why I am now with the Church of Perfect Liberty, my answer is … because it is the teaching of the TAO … that the church embodies.  I’ve lived long enough to know that the TAO is life itself, and not everyone wants to be a warrior, even though if you think about it, we all are in our own way.  What everyone does want is to find peace of mind. We all treasure those moments in our lives when life is uncomplicated and we feel totally at ONE with the world.

living in the moment

977b9042fda61356a59f87c1600dae3bWhen we live the PL way, we live in the moment, and we experience all of what life has to offer.  We are students of life.

PL Principle #1      I will live paying careful attention, putting Makoto (sincerity) into ALL I say and do.

Saturday I had planned to stay home, and work on my blog.  That was my plan for the day, the Universe had other ideas.. mid morning I found myself on the highway headed out of town, towards a thrift shop about a 20 minute drive from where I live, on a super highway.  Back roads would have taken twice the time or longer.  I zipped along with no idea of what lay ahead.  As the miles flew by my mood got lighter, my thoughts clearer.  The day was a charmer, clear, cool and brisk.

f88149141d9df7ce68a15195e8bed139

As my journey continued, I found myself driving along country roads, past farmers fields, stretches of open road with nothing but plowed fields with their light dusting of snow.  There were areas of woodlands, with creeks and the odd boulder or two.  As the scenes before me changed so did the thoughts in my mind.  Instead of jumbled and tossed around one on top of the other, they were spaced out, calmer, and more focused.

From my first destination, I had planned on another destination that was across country back roads to another non profit location, south west of my original starting point.  I was almost there, when to my surprise I decided to head north up a highway that would lead me home instead of further away.  OK I thought, I’ll just visit this other shop that is on the highway once I’m in the city.

When I was driving through a very small hamlet, where the grocery store once was, I saw large Chinese lettering, and a cars stationed in front of the building.  I have driven by this building often enough, when it was a grocery store, we had stopped once so I could get water.  It had been vacant now for some time. With no thought at all, I turned in and parked.  Walked up to the door to knock, only to have it open in welcome as I arrived.

18 rules of life

I had arrived in time for a special service and lecture by a visiting monk from China (Mongolia).  Who knew!  The member who spoke to me was very gracious, and when another member arrived who spoke English arrived, I was helped to “dress” for the service (they participants wore special robes to show their respect while in the temple) and how to hold my hands when chanting.  (no I had never chanted before, nor had I ever attended a Buddhist service)  Yes the service was in Chinese, and NO I do not speak Chinese.

Hey it snowed last night!

Ahhhh don’t we wish it could be so, idyllic fresh fallen snow, the crisp country air and evergreens looking like sugar-coated fantasy trees in a Disney movie.

This was a picture found on social media after the big storm in the Buffalo area. (Yahoo  news)  Somewhere between the two lies the different realities of a winter day in the part of the world that enjoy the wonders of nature’s four seasons.

Sadly even those who know that winter comes every year, and have been how to drive in snow, forget or choose to  do it “their own way”  Often drivers have not even prepared their cars for winter driving.

We are not all in positions where we can avoid being out when Mother Nature gives full expression to her capabilities, however, as in all situations in life, if we are prepared, and focused on what we are doing, challenges are always easier to deal with.  When we deal with situations out of our control in creative ways, ingenuity lights the way,

thank you SO much

b64591a3d5881871611cec2fdbdf80e9

“Thank you so very much” said the voice, it was soft and cultured, without turning I knew that it would be someone older, of an “age” when courtesy and etiquette mattered.  I heard rather than saw the smile in the young woman’s voice that was serving the client.  The store was busy, crowded with shoppers looking for that special gift at the advertised discounted prices.”You are so welcome, it has been my pleasure” was the reply. The interchange between customer and sales associate  made me smile, I felt a nice feeling and thought what a wonderful way to start a day.  When I turned to the area where the voices had come from I was surprised to see not an elderly woman, but a young girl with faded jeans, and a torn T-shirt, her hair was dyed a fluorescent pink, her lips and nails were an ebony black, studded with blinking gems. When she smiled at me I saw that she had a tattoo of a rose on her  cheek and a gold ring in her nose. I must have stared, because she gave me a knowing smile, while   flashing me the sweetest of looks from the  bluest of eyes under the longest lashes I’ve ever seen.  With a mischievous nod of her head, she winked at me and said “A very good day to you Mam” and gracefully turned and walked away.

The sales associate who had witnessed this exchange gave a little giggle, and said, “isn’t she just the greatest”  I recovered my surprise and agreed with her that yes,  “she” certainly was.  That was …… and she named the actress who was playing at the theatre up the way.  Ah…. a light bulb went on in my gray matter….yes there was a play happening in the city, and they could have been having a dress rehearsal … yet … I knew I had just been given a “lesson”  a reminder, that I should not be judging a book by its cover, and I for sure, should not have made assumptions…. PL Precept # 18 – each moment is a turning point.

PL Principle #2 … … …. I will look for and be aware of shortcomings in my own thinking and actions  **the exact wording to this Principle is  “I will not have complaints about others, matters, nor the weather.  Rather I will always be creative and will look for shortcomings in my own thinking and actions.

Take a moment to say Thank You for the lessons you have learned today.  I like to begin and end each day with a sense of appreciation for the gifts I have been blessed with, and the lessons I have yet to learn. To know true meaning in our lives, we have to sincerely believe and appreciate the blessings we receive.

vocations – relationships

At 24 young Dorothy Hart a successful actress in Hollywood, left her career to become a Catholic nun, Mother Prioress Dolores Hart  What a change this young lady made in her life…  Thomas Merton said “A man knows he has found his vocation when he stops thinking about how to live and begins to live.”  We are guided in life though an interplay of human responsibilities and divine directives.  Spiritual maturity  requires diligence, a clever mind and a trusting /loving heart.

c464e1442818105ebe86231e6b8dafb5A few ingredients for a good relationship are, respect, courtesy, appreciation and a dedication to the commitment, whatever that may be.  Negative thinking is something that afflicts us all at one time or another.  PL Precept # 15, All is a Mirror. No matter how often I revisit this Precept, it always presents me with a new perspective, life is an ongoing lesson, and I am the dedicated student.  Part of living in the moment is accepting the feelings that can wash over me at any  given time,  The homework is applying myself to understanding the moment, and then letting it go. A negative moment, will only be so, if we don’t apply positive action (s).

vintage – classic

1955 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible 265 Cl. automatic*

How is that when vehicles age, rust and fall apart, we still love them.  This one has been kept in wonderful condition, or lovingly restored. I am enamored with the classic cars, trucks, especially prior to 1960’s.   Something happened to the designs after that, and I lost interest.  I viewed the car simply as the means of transportation.  Now many years later, it is a completely different story.  As I mentioned in an earlier blog, even rusted and in decay I can be totally mesmerized. In fact the other day I purchased a paint enamel called “rust”.

481be26754f1bd0e0f83c0e7038425f1

When was the last time you actually saw a hood ornament on a vehicle?  I can’t recall seeing one in a long time.  This one is from a 1936 Packard – (Steve Corey,Flickr)  Lately I find that when I need to take a break from being in “work mode” I search out old photos of  cars/trucks and related items for my Pinterest board,  I have asked myself what this interest is in cars that I only have a vague recollection of, and I don’t have an answer.

In PL, one of the lessons is about listening to others, and to not interrupt, to let what is being said  come to us in a manner that we are respectful of the speaker’s intentions. While I do my best to practice this, I’ve found over the years that I do not always allow my own thoughts and desires to be given the “respect” due them. I’m more apt to listen carefully to someone else, a friend for example will be speaking to me and I am interested and giving my full attention to the conversation.   While I act on my interests, I don’t think that I always understand why I’ve developed a passion for a new “interest”

It is said, that when you are being influenced by an invisible force,  (the Chinese mind -TAO) sees this inspiration as a “penetrating influence” it is important to still the mind, and allow the  gentle force to shape and give form to the answers to the unspoken questions.  Through a willing submission to the time and the situation, you will gain insight and perspective… I know I’m not alone in this love of the classic/vintage vehicle, any feedback or input out there?

whining and complaining

photo 5 (5)

There are days when this could be me.  My busy mind chattering and chattering about dear knows what.  I don’t think I whine and complain, but that is because I don’t want to believe that I am just as guilty as the next person at having a negative day.  All my life I have known that no two people will see the mountain view the same way, even though they are looking from the same vantage point.

An exercise that we practice in PL (Perfect Liberty) is to work at accepting the differences in life and to respect the difference in others.

I fell short today, I disagreed with a sentiment sent to me by a caring sister.  I vented.  yet on reflection, she was only giving voice to her perspective and in doing so, used the language and comfort terms of her personal beliefs.  I want respect for my beliefs I in turn need to respect hers, and allow her, her form of expression. The bottom line is she cares.  That I appreciate.

PL Principle 21 – I will not have complaints about others, matters, nor the weather  Rather I will always be creative and will look for shortcomings in my own thinking and actions.

My thanks to Little Sister (Wei) who is traveling in Mexico right now, these are her pictures.

I will be visiting NY State tomorrow.  See you all on my return.  have a great start to the new week.
