musing 7.2.16

I’d like to use the photos found on social media today, some I’ve used before, to tell a story.(musing)

There simply beautiful, amazing plants in the Universe, depending on what part of the world you live, or visit, some of them will be front and center for you to enjoy and delight over. Each plant has something unique to them, and appear the way they do, often for survival purposes.

Amazon-Water-Lily

Example, the Amazon water-lily, it can grow to over 2 metres in diameter,  that is, about 9 something feet.  I am not likely to see one in my travels, while I am wandering the parks and countryside in my Canadian  backyard. To deter rainforest animals from eating therm, they have rows of sharp spines on the underside of the leaves.

Strangler-Fig

This picture, is of a strangler fig, where many epiphytes avoid harming the plant on which they grow, the strangler fig  eventually kills its host tree.  It starts out as a little bitty thing, that looks so cute growing among the branches of its host tree, but as it grows, its roots thread their way down into the soil, and its stems keep wrapping around the host tree. It grows stronger with the passing of time, capturing more and more sunlight as it expands and grows till eventually the host tree dies.

That said, the strangler fig is important to the rainforest ecosystem, its fruit is a mainstay diet for many of the animals that live in the rainforest.

I used to talk about this plant during my days in “health care” – regarding stress..  Stress is often seen only as a negative, but in fact it is and can be very positive.  It is all in how we perceive the challenges that come our way.  The obstacle that is blocking out the sunshine making it harder for us to enjoy the sun, is often just like us in the sense that it had to grow big and tall to survive as long as it has.  It had the sunshine, and the rain.  Now you come along, your choice is to give up and live in the dark, or to embrace and enjoy the company of the host you landed on.  In sharing you grow and are supported in your efforts, you get to see that the when you reach for the sun, and let your roots slide down further into the forest floor, you become more stabilized.

living bridge

This is a picture of the resourcefulness of the people living in India, they built a living bridge from the strangler fig trees, the bridge is alive and always growing stronger.

This tree standing in the Nanning Park in Guangxi China, is  what started this train of thought.  The host tree is long gone. so today admirers see only this lattice tree.  When we look at another human being, we see only what is on the outside.  We see where they are at that moment, in that space and time.

Some of us are like the Amazon Water-Lily beautiful to look at, pretty as a picture, but.. under the exterior of  “who we project” is someone very different.  There are so many layers to us, it is a patient partner who will lovingly and tenderly peel away each layer.  This applies to any and every one.  Because a “man” appears strong, and unapproachable, means zip, everyone has a heart, has feelings, feels sadness, and wants love.

When something is impossible it is because we don’t want it badly enough.  Or what we think we want, is not really what is best for us, and Nature steps in, and helps reshape and redirect  every day is a new adventure and a new discovery.

hedgie, calling card

Today is a busy world, how we keep in touch tends to be with a text, and e-mail .. AND if we are moved, we pick up the phone and have a chat.  So often I hear that the chosen way to connect is by text.

card 2x

I was out with my Mother and sister yesterday, my Mom is legally blind, and can no longer stand for long periods of time, due to a very nasty hip and bad back, so she is in a wheelchair.  She has always enjoyed receiving, and sending out cards.  At 95 she still has that desire to “keep in touch” and for her, she likes doing it by card and with a phone call.  At 95 she is no longer surrounded by her many many friends, the cards arriving and the calls, have long ago stopped happening.

Frog card 1.7.16

My sisters’ and I find ourselves doing her card shopping, she likes to always have cards on hand to send or give to friends and acquaintances, some of my friends who used to participate in the ATC (Artist Trading Card) rounds, used to send her cards, simply to share with her.  She loved it.  She has binders of saved mini art pieces that she can go back to and remember.  To my wonderful friends who still send her an ATC and /or card, I appreciate and love you  with my whole heart for being so thoughtful and generous, in sharing your gifts.

valentine 3

Since way before our time, love, caring appreciation, recognition was shared with a card, sentiment, letter, it was something done by the person sending, the special personal greeting, that when received, was always a special moment, and a time when a “fresh” connection was made … across the miles, distance and time vanished as the friendship was forged into a tighter bond.

It is not in the number of times, you do something, or how often you call, it is in the quality of the time you spend, and the sincerity of your actions.

Monday’s discovery

Early mornings find me quietly enjoying the creativity and thoughts of my fellow bloggers. anticipating my first cuppa ice-cold coffee, when Marga Demmers’ blog opens up..   The Photographer Smiled   It was a fun read, and got me thinking about where I put my singing lids.  You have all heard of singing bowls, yes?

IMG_1526

Singing bowls (also known as Tibetan Singing Bowls, rin gongs, Himalayan bowls or suzu gongs) are a type of bell, specifically classified as a standing bell. Rather than hanging inverted or attached to a handle, singing bowls sit with the bottom surface resting, and the rim vibrates to produce sound characterized by a fundamental frequency (first harmonic) and usually two audible harmonic overtones (second and third harmonic).[citation needed]

Singing bowls are used worldwide for meditation, music, relaxation, and personal well-being. Singing bowls were historically made throughout Asia, especially Nepal, China and Japan. They are closely related to decorative bells made along the Silk Road from the Near East to Western Asia. Today they are made in Nepal, India, Japan, China and Korea.   – source Wikipedia

You can read more about the bowls on Wikipedia, I have a small collection, I love the sound produced in the older, (antique) bowls, they produce a harmonic overtone that resonates with me.  The complex harmonic frequencies simply “speak” volumes to me.  Each voice is unique. The hand-made bowls are my preference.

Modern bowls today, are manufactured.  However, if you search you can still find newer ones that have been made in the traditional way.  I admit to being a bit of a snob when it came to the bowls.. I went out of my way to search out and find just the “right” ones (for me and my uses)

I used them in my personal meditation and prayers, and with students and “clients”  To this day, the sound of a bowl will ring out in the day or night-time atmosphere, as I allow myself to drift with the vibration and sound.  The longer the bowl sings, the deeper the journey.

The bowls will sing if you run your wooden instrument along its sides, caressing it with a gently rhythm, or you can gently tap it with the leather or covered end of your mallet.. (personal preferences are many)

Those of us who enjoy and use the singing bowls, are passionate about them, and many will often give performances or demonstrations of just how melodic and  mind satisfying the voices are.  I play only for my own enjoyment and purposes.. however, many practice and use the bowl to play for large audiences.

Having a fondness for the bowls, you know that as I travelled and made my way around “treasure” shops, I looked for bowls that had been cast off, or simply given away, the previous owner thinking them merely decorative. while on such a hunt I happened to be in the aisle where they had on display pots, pans, lids and other household items.  We had a pot that needed a cover.. so I was idly picking up different lids when I was jarred to attention, when this one lid sang to me.  What… it was ugly, heavy and battered looking.. to be sure, I found myself a wooden stirring stick, and tentatively gave it a tap… WOW….  zing went the strings of my heart.

IMG_1523

Love can happen when you least expect it to.  It is just something that happens, we can go out and search all we like, but it is when we are ready, and open to the experience that we become naturally receptive to the  calling, “voice” of another.

LOL all this to say…   thanks to Marga, I dug out my lids ( I later found the one on the right, at home, waiting for me to see it just wasn’t a lid)

Love beckons from strange places, and when you least expect it.  Isn’t Love Grand!!!!

HAPPY MONDAY EVERYONE

DSC00357

I’ve lived all my life without ever having felt such an immediate connection

I knew that there was a horse in the paddock

his beauty I could see when we drove in

however, my focus was on the man raking the leaves

he was who we had come up the drive to see

when I disembarked from the truck

2 mature and protective great danes came to  greet me

although strangers, we all got along

the visit went with ease

when I turned to leave,

for some unknown reason,

it was not to the truck I went

but to the compelling figure at the fence

our eyes met, and I felt a sudden rush of recognition

of what I knew not what,

only that this handsome beast

knew my name and was wanting me closer

DSC00358

we met, we touched, both wanted more

how is it that I’ve never had a desire before to connect with a horse

I didn’t want to go, but I had to leave

will that moment come again,

I don’t know, but the encounter,

the soft muzzle, warm breath and gentle nudge

is etched in my memory

it was a moment REALLY  lived….
