life = art

wall art, hung 3.27.17

Art is subjective.  Art takes on many forms and is never really something that people will  agree on.  Style, techniques, presentation, so many many varieties and opinions.

As an “artist” I begin with an empty canvas or sometimes with one I’ve seen at a thrift and want to repurpose.  It is amazing how effective gesso is at wiping out what was previously on the canvas.  In this case I covered up a rather mundane picture of leaves and shrubs with black gesso (Demco) used for oil and acrylic.

wall art 3.27.17

This little character started out full-bodied, but somehow, he didn’t like what was happening, and as other artists will tell you.. it wasn’t long before, he took on a life of his own. Happens when writing too.  The story line you have had in your head for days, starts to take shape on the screen, your fingers are typing away, your mind is playing out the scene…  it is all so smooth, so “happening”.. till you stop and take a breather…. you see the plot has taken turns, even you didn’t expect.

Is it “intuition” what happens when we are creative, when we try to reproduce the ideas in our mind to paper, canvas or other form of expression.  How often do we hear the expression.. “life happens”  or “sh#t happens”  Sometimes it is super cool, great, awesome even, and other times, it is a lot of , darn, cripes, and %@%# !  Whatever, there is always a consequence  to our actions.

IN PL we learn … that every day is a new beginning.  We learn to be creative with any and all challenges /opportunities that come our way.  Most importantly to appreciate the lessons, and outcomes of the day.

There is always a way, always someone who will help guide you to find the “way”

back in time

P1000619Three pounds of hamburger for $1.00

4 loaves of bread for $0.50 cents.

3 packages of hamburger buns for $1.00

Onions, celery, peas and carrots were the vegetables of the day, along with the potatoes of course, or in our case, the bag of  rice.  Your shopping cart could be full for just over $10.  Kraft Dinner was 4 for $1.00 and sometimes 6 for a dollar.  Baked beans, came in all two flavours .. baked with pork, or molasses.  Maybe there was one with a tomato sauce.

Mother whipped up dishes with chicken hearts, giblets, and often Sunday would be a roast of Beef, or Port heart.  I recall her chicken livers and green peppers.  Chinese dishes of course, all flavoured with garlic, ginger, and one of the soy sauces.  I still like these meats today, but I do see that they seem to be less the flavour of the day.

When she made up the giblets in a garlic and bit of honey sauce stir fried with the cabbage,  the sauce was oh so good over the steamed rice.

The icing on the cake, was when she would brown the rice that was stuck to the bottom of the pot… then carefully pour in some boiling water just as it got all crispy.  That was dessert.  We seldom had sweets for dessert till much later ..   This served me well, I don’t crave sweets, however, do admit to drooling for creamy butter filled buns from the Chinese grocers.

When I first started to cook for my own family, I recall gathering up cook books that showed us how to cook minced beef in hundreds of ways.  I’m thinking of this because today, I decided to do up a meat loaf for hubby.  While whipping it up, my thoughts drifted to when it wasn’t an unusual happening in the kitchen but rather a weekly dish that was served up in a zillion different ways, with either roast potatoes or rice.. and of course the obligatory side dish of a veggie.

Do I eat this way now. Nope, no, and no.  I can’t remember when I last had peas or carrots. a la frozen mixed vegetables sometimes with corn.  Now I overdose on brussels sprouts, okra, and tender green shoots from the Chinese grocers.

Oh how time changes… =^_^=    thanks for sharing the trip down memory lane with me.

My husband will have the meat loaf to himself (which he likes) ..  I am steaming pork ribs with Okra and red peppers for moi in a black bean and garlic sauce.  Can you hear the anticipation !!!

PL Principle #10   I will live in true harmony with my spouse.

paint time

P1000646

Good day everyone….

No two artists when looking at a blank canvas see the same thing.  Two photographers looking in the same area, along the same street, will each have a different “capture” in their lens.  Ever heard these words.. ” you were there, didn’t you see bla bla bla”   Well, you both might have been there at the same time, but you both very likely didn’t see the same things.  Each would have viewed the scene or circumstances from his/her own perspective.

Now the word “artist” what does it imply?   Or the word “crafter”  are they one and the same… hmmmm. you thinking about it?

Does it come down to how quickly you want your pant to dry?  No two mediums dry the same way ,even when choosing an ink pad, you have to know what you want to do with the ink you are using.. if you use the wrong kind, your inks can bleed or run… even when you thought it was dry… kinky right..

P1000647

That is why I love life and all the artist challenges it provides.  When I make the wrong choice, .. I get to start over or try to work with the results of my 1st choice. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it just doesn’t.  A friend draws in chalk, she lives the moment, when it is gone, she has lived the experience,  and moves on.. that is a beautiful way to let go.

I loved the play of shadows and light on the bramble above.  It struck me at that moment that it was full of intrigue. Today should I see it again, I might not give it a second glance. It would simply be a mass of twigs and branches waiting for spring  and rejuvenation.

La vie est belle, it is our perception that can cloud or colour our view.

I prefer arylic and water colours to oil… why…. paint time… =^_^=

PL Precept #1  Life is Art

Spring yay!

To walk where no one has walked before

P1000645

I wish, =^_^= but I was the one to make a new trail

down an unused road, that led me to another time

P1000643

a family home, once filled with laughter

now stands silent, waiting

this was not the structure tho’ that had caught my attention

rather I was drawn to a building that called out

to my searching ” eyes”

P1000641

“look, look, see my charm”, I got a picture in full sunlight

but this one with the little building half in the shade

I found had more to say

I sensed this is where the children played

on rainy days, on sunny days

this little structure captured and ignited

their imagination in every way

this pretty face

was also part of yesterday =^_^=

It was an amazing day !!!

In PL (Perfect Liberty) we do our best to live each day doing our best to be creative in every way.  Make every day count, rain, snow, sunshine, it doesn’t matter. Do your best every day.

Why not…

funny

Happy Saturday everyone… A dog whose name I have long forgotten looked out at me over the silly sunglasses someone put on him…Maybe his name was Teddy.   Dogs are so patient with us.  They have no idea why we dress, pamper and  spoil them, but they graciously allow us our fun.

I know my girl, she was not amused. But… she was a good sport =^_^= long enough for me to get a picture.

Believe it or not.. when I did these characters.. I thought they were so cute.  Now I can’t even tell you where they are.  OR why I was making them.  That was then, this is NOW.

All this to say.  Life is what it is.  Every day brings new ideas, and opportunities to be creative.  Sometimes they involve others, sometimes you are on your own.

PL Precept # 7 Everything exists in Relativity.

Being aware, appreciating difference, and living each moment the best we can, increases the potential of living in “Perfect Liberty”

watching

mar 17.17 watching

It was a beautiful day .. I took to the roads .. you’ve often heard me say how I love driving the highway, headed out of the city core.  The stretch of roads I take have a lot of country side along the way. It is a way for me to unwind.

I’ve undertaken the huge task of clearing my work table, and letting go of the bits and pieces that seem to get left behind after each and every project.  I think that last over-haul was perhaps last fall when I was working on the greeting cards for the church.

As an artist it is easy to get lax, I find that I need to challenge myself to step outside the box, much like with my writing.  I can get very motivated, the ideas spring endlessly past my gray cells, yet I’m not smitten enough to take action.  Then out of nowhere, I know the time is right.  Since last week, I’ve noticed a lot “gemstone” colours, spring colours mainly, I’m rather excited to see what is around the corner.

I got knitting needles today, I’m not keen on knitting, but I found myself looking at square in the Michael’s’ store, they ask for donations of 9″ squares, they are put together to make colourful blankets for one of their charities. Who knows.  I do know how to knit, it just doesn’t appeal to me.

PL Precept #18   Each moment is a turning point

There was more than one face in the above painting, but I pulled the one out.. because she was watching … =^_^=

silent voice

lemur-begining-of

Sometimes when I’m driving, I get half formed thoughts, inkling of ideas, nothing really pithy, just thoughts drifting in and out as I wind my way through the traffic along the highways and side roads.

Sometimes there is a particular sentence or catch phrase that will stick with me, today it was “silent voice’  I was coming home from church, its been a busy week with my Mom having to be moved to long term care, (all this in a very short period of time)  So I’ve not had the quiet times I usually have on a daily basis to regroup.

If I try to focus on one particular task, I get restless, and I need to find a way to slow down, “chill” as we used to say.  I was cleaning out a box, sorting the contents to get it ready to recycle, when I found an inexpensive canvas I got somewhere, with some kind of print all over it.

Without really thinking about it, I got out some of the old paints that were in the box, and threw some on the canvas .. using the brayer, which of course, didn’t work well, the canvas was not well-stretched over the frame.  The paints were a lime green and a fuchsia type pink, old enough that they were not well blended.. but I didn’t seem to care, I just persisted with the brayer till I covered the canvas.

You can see, I then began to wipe some of it off using an old brush that had a dry tip… somehow the silent voice saw a pair of eyes .. and that is what I tried to find.  when the voice stopped. I stopped.  that is the way it works for me.  I feel much better.. my Lemur called so, because that is kind of what it reminds me of, is sitting there, content to watch me as I type.

Life is what it is, isn’t it.  We all have a silent voice, we just don’t always hear or listen to it.  I’ll see what I think when I wake and visit with him tomorrow.  Yes, I feel it is a “him” or would that be hymn  =^_^=

Pl Precept # 15   All is a Mirror

My son called me a short while back, and asked me if I’d ever heard of Alan Watts. He was very serious about it, and I was totally surprised by his question.  In my mind, everyone knew Alan Watts (British philosopher best known for his interpretations and interest in Eastern philosophy)

I had learned a lot from Alan Watts, he had been one of my favourite authors, his words spoke to me, a young Taoist living in Canada where my thoughts and ways were so foreign to most around me.  Alan introduced and popularised Eastern philosophy by his writing and teachings  now I see that his lectures and talks have been transposed and are available on YouTube.  The wonders of the modern world.

For anyone interested, this is the official Alan Watts web page  Alan Watts.com

He was prolific as a writer, and speaker. One of the first to interpret Eastern wisdom for a Western Audience.  With our Church of Perfect Liberty here in Canada, at times this is how I sometimes feel, when I try to introduce and explain, that our church is a philosophy and way of life.

My son renewed my determination to work faithfully and diligently every day to bring the PL Way to North America.  World Peace is so so important to our well-being as inhabitants of this planet.

The PL teachings help us to live in a way that will encourage and help us, live a happy and peaceful, balanced life, this will radiate out from us… bringing more love and acceptance of our unique and diversified personalities and cultures, when we know and show respect, we ourselves, grow and gain from new beginnings..

We are all ONE –

know love, show love, be love.. nurture and exist in a peaceful world

now is now

gelli-art-2-20-17

Sometimes, when the itch comes to put  something down, you have no idea, what it is you are wanting to “say/see”  You get out your paints, canvas or whatever it is you want to work with and you simply begin .

Through the years I have learned that what works for someone else, is not going to wonk for me.  I have to listen to what is happening “inside my head”  to believe that  my instinct will guide me to what it is I need to express.

If you write, paint, draw, crochet, knit whatever it is you do to express your creativity, if try to force the flow, you are never happy with the results.

Now is now.. I will suddenly come to a halt.. I do not want to do anything else, not at the moment anyway.. When that happens, I know to stop and step back, and allow what has happened to “talk” to me, to identify itself to me.

Photography is the same way, I can take several pictures, of the same area, or object(s) yet when I review them, more often than not, it is the one I least expected to be “the” one, that will jump out at me.

Life is the very same.. every day we are presented with a new canvas, new opportunities, tomorrow I may or may not want to revisit this piece.  Some expressions, speak to my spiritual side.. other times, I’m simply OK with the results, but I feel a satisfaction of having put colour into my thought process.

Tomorrow will be the start of another “today”… what colours will you put on your palette.

Whatever you do.. do it with a smile, put your whole heart into it.  Make the most of NOW.
