Sunday

Baby it is cold outside.

Someone asked me “where do birds go to die”… Last night I was reading that the birds work very hard at surviving our winters… the nights are the worst time.. they have to eat enough to fuel their bodies till they can feed again.. they huddle puffed up in their “safe” place till they can start feeding again as soon as the daylight begins again,

I went around yesterday to various shops looking for “fats” to try my hand at making suet cakes for them, Every little bit helps.. This is a month where so much is happening, celebrations around every corner, people gathering … Please remember that not everyone will live the same experiences, or have the same opportunities. Reach out if you can.. remember to smile… and share a positive or happy vibe whenever you can.

You can be with God by having a prayerful mind. Let’s pray for world Peace. We are all one big family. Let’s start by praying for the happiness of those around us.

This wild turkey surprised me by hopping up to the branch that I had just buttered with the suet the woodpeckers and smaller birds love. He was not going to be left out. It was high off the ground, I have to stretch to butter the crevice, but that was not a problem.. I turned and there he was we were face to face.

I came home to find that Jim (Jim Robertson) had sent me a link to his web page. https://photo-stories.myportfolio.com/dewberry-trail-feeders … the video is a 3 minute video he put together from his visits to Dewberry (Nature trail- conservation area) in Ottawa, Canada.

You have all heard me go on about my morning outings. This is one of the locations I go, the other one is at Mer Bleue. Both are NCC Conservation area.

Please if you have time, visit Jim’s website, he has the most wonderful photographs that will take you on a visual journey through the many places he has visited. I delighted in his pictures of the birds that I have gotten to know “intimately”… (I see daily) and interact with. I often get asked about the feeders, with Jim’s video.. you will see where I “hang out” and spend endless hours just “BEING” in nature and with the birds and assorted wildlife that come to visit.

It’s easier to adapt to something when we find it interesting. No matter how enjoyable a situation is, a slight change in our attitude can make it boring. Let’s face any situation with curiosity and enthusiasm.

Saturday -meet Dirk

Feel like I should play a few bars of “who do you love”…. by chance I chatted a photographer who was standing by the feeders. I asked for his coordinates… you can see, I had a hard time deciding which of his photos I wanted to use.. he had a Raven…. ahhhh be still my heart… and then I saw the Wild Turkeys… my heart skipped a beat…. and and… and.. look at the turkey vulture…!!! the faces.. so adorable.. This was the tree limbs back in early 2021, below is what is left.

Below is how the feeding area looks now… I’ve since changed a couple of the feeders but you can see the difference and the setting. (a beautiful wild turkey, I miss them.. they have gone further into the woods for the winter… )

For your info…. Mer Bleue has closed the board walk, it has been blocked off… so has the boardwalk at P6 off Moodie.. At Mer Bleue we are now hosting Evening Grosbeaks, and joy of happiness… they are at P23 too. (Dewberry)…. today was a real winner, I got both the red bellied woodpeckers and the grosbeaks while I was there filling the feeders.. bonus the crackle dropped in.

Nov 18 Evening Grosbeaks

Happiness is … finding that the Evening Grosbeaks have come to dine. I have learned to really appreciate the wonderful talents of photographers like Dan (Dan Cadieux) who can patiently wait in the cold for just the right moment to capture a moment in time that you may or may never see again. Dan’s photos are simply put … awesome.. https://www.instagram.com/dancadphotography/ his photos are works of art… I asked if he could capture part of the group that had gathered to feed.. and he did.. he is a walking “wonder” et voila…. I got this in my morning mail. Brightened the day! Thank you Dan!

P10 Lime Kiln trail

It was cold enough that there was a layer of ice on the water. I was the only human there, it was a delightful walk, I was able to take my time and just wander in and out off the main trail.

Of course it wasn’t long before I heard the sound of voices coming up behind me. I moved over to let the people by, I didn’t want to be rushed. I took my time and walked all the way to the ruins of the old Kiln. The trail continued on to another entrance off another road… from the signs I could see it would be a long jaunt. I’ll do it another time. I got my two miles in, and that was my aim.

Good morning it is now very early 16th. and we’ve had a blanket of snow… I will be leaving soon to see what kind of pictures I can get after I feed the birds. Have a good day everyone… Today’s calendar quote follows.

We can see crows everywhere these days, they are gathering along the roads I travel, I see them in the trees, I hear them… Their calls, and greetings fill the air … Mornings are filled with their chatter. At the feeders yesterday the evening grosbeaks were singing, how can one not rejoice at the sound of such “community” spirit. Actually it wasn’t just the Grosbeaks, the Blue jays, Doves, Chickadees, Nuthatches, and the Woodpeckers were all enjoying the start of a new day… the pesky squirrels needed to join in.. no one wanted to be left out.

dawn and fog

These were taken, some time after I arrived, the fog had been so dense that it was too dark, Driving I could only see one car length ahead … fortunately I know the road, even so.. I was very cautious. My appreciation only deepens for the photographers who do this on a regular basis. If you want the pictures you have to be prepared to get up and out, so you are at where you want to be when the light is just how you want it.

It’s about being at the right place at the right time.. sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t.

Take action without thinking too hard. No matter how hard you try to foresee the future, you really don’t know how things will turnout. Do your best and see how it plays out.
