Happiness is… looking up and realizing that there is an Evening Grosbeak looking back at you.
Made my day, I just stopped in my tracks and admired … the delight that filled me was instant I waited all last year for a glimpse of one.. and now.. here it was … the moment of sheer pleasure. Bold as brass, it just looked back to acknowledge my admiration… then went back to his breakfast.

Evening Grosbeak is a passerine bird in the finch family. Adult male Evening Grosbeaks are yellow and black birds with a prominent white patch in the wings. They have dark heads with a bright-yellow stripe over the eye. Females and immatures are mostly gray, with white-and-black wings and a greenish-yellow tinge to the neck and flanks.

This is grosbeak telling me to “get with it” I was late getting to the feeders and this bird had something to say about it. We had a lot of grosbeaks that year, (this was a couple of years back 2021) I miss the little beggars.. they were so vocal. However .. I would love to have them land in my patch again,… they were always so interesting to watch and listen to,
These days, the airwaves are filled with grumbling.. my goodness… I remember when the media brought joy and warm wonderful stories and put on entertaining shows for our viewing pleasure. All that is gone.. oh there are a lot of choices out there, but its all so “canned” and sorry “phony
I know “… there are movies out there that come around each season, same story line, different actors, backdrops are different but the same theme… boy meets girl, or girl meets boy whatever.. and you always know the ending.
Oh dear oh dear… I think I need to go find a cup of coffee. how are you dear reader, are you enjoying this “merry” month of December. Here the big worry is that it won’t be cold enough this winter for our canal to freeze for skating. Of course if it was cold and we had tons of snow, the complaint would be we can’t get around and it is soooo cold, how can we ski and skate comfortably.
I know I’m going to make myself a toasted ham sandwich on WHITE soft fresh bread with wilting lettuce . I’ll use hot mustard to make it all come together. Yum.
Even if you have done it many times before put your full heart into it, When we are doing something, especially if it is a small or easy task, we tend to get sloppy. Let’s put our whole heart into everything we do, even if its something as simple as pushing a button,

Taking left over chicken livers and giblets, all diced up for the crows to mix in their corn and black sunflower seeds,
Keven took this, it is soooo full of expression I had to use it this morning. (male Grosbeak)
Instead of worrying do something about it. It doesn’t help to over think situations such as, What if this happens? or, “Things might end up that way” Instead be proactive and change how you see and do things in each situation.

Spending time with the birds means I get to see that they are not just a pretty face, they do have their own personalities within their “circle”. I don’t know how long you had to stand there to get this shot Kevin but thank you for sending it to me, its wonderful. This little guy is having his say….good on him. The other day when they were gathering to dine, they were very vocal that day… other days.. I don’t hear a “peep”.. not like the Blue Jays, who love to call out and shout to one and all.
Actually.. my new friends the crows are very good at vocalizing as well. Smiles to self, another “language” to learn..
On that note, I have noticed that we have many different readers now from all over the globe. Welcome! I am enjoying the introduction to the many new languages (to me) that are now part of my world, thank you for introducing me to your “culture” words and colourful stories /pictures.

Cheers everyone, have a great Tuesday… wherever you are.
What beauties, when I arrived this morning, I was delighted to find that the Grosebeaks were all gathered for their morning buffet. Having come to fill the feeders before heading to the dentist I did not have my camera, fortunately for me Kevin came by mid day and got these pictures for us to enjoy.
Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If in our heart, we still cling to anything – anger, anxiety, or possessions – we cannot be free.
Thich Nhat Hanh
Let’s begin today with a smile. Let’s start the day with a positive outlook, looking forward to what we can discover.
Try as I might, the beautiful face eluded me when the camera clicked. What a beautiful face, so bold, so striking. Sometimes called the beautiful magical vagabond, it seems that its appearance in the woodlands where I go, has drawn birders to the area to try and catch a glimpse. I confess I cheated, I bribed them with black seeds.. I got there and filled the empty feeders.. then stepped back and waited.
At first I thought ahhh I’m in luck a couple of blue jays arrived.. I got my camera ready, and of course as soon as I was ready they flew off. While I stood there deciding what I wanted to do I saw a flash of gold, and the wonderful masked head of the Grosebeak. Its face is so “arresting”.. the beak, and the markings on the face are vivid.
Their colouring is described as mustard yellow, with a big pale bill and gold eyebrows. I will have to go back and try again for a frontal view. I have googled it.. and see pictures of the face, but I want to capture a face for myself. An intriguing personality, I’m inspired. =^_^= I, of course am convinced there will be non as beautiful as the ones I saw today. =^_^=
To my long time birding friend, who knows until recently I have had no real interest in birds, “yes, I went out today and got myself a couple of Bird books so that I can identify the birds I find.” One of the ladies who sought me out to thank me for putting food out so they would come, had her ID book, from which she showed me the bird and the write up. Keeps it in her car she does..
This could be a passing fancy, but for now.. I am keen!
Always be cheerful, happy and good humored. When you make effort to be cheerful and happy, you will naturally begin to feel that way.
