chop suey Friday

Sticks and stones, rocks, brick, lumber, everything in life, is canvas ready.  each day a new beginning. Art is everywhere.  To each his/her own…..  creativity begins within.

I remember when I began landscaping in earnest, I would pick up driftwood, rocks cast off metal objects, an empty lot was a huge canvas .. one that would grow and give me a new “view” every season and year.

Bom Dia, Saturday has rolled around again. I thought to share some of the colours I have captured in the last few weeks of roaming

IMG_1111

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.  I couldn’t resist driving over to the other end of the parking lot to discover the myriad of colours I could see.

I am sure everyone was wondering what this elderly lady was doing behind the liquor store with her camera.  But I was having fun, and isn’t that what life is all about.

The other day I was trying to explain that I am not a photographer, but an artist that uses her camera to capture textures and moods, that I can reuse, recycle into one of my expressions.  Whatever right.. it is my fun, my hobby, and I love it.  Just like I enjoyed trekking the harvested cranberry fields the other day in the rain.

Theses are trash bins I found in Chinatown the other day. My son and I had a philosophical conversation last night about life.  It is always interesting to listen and learn from someone who has a different perspective on life.  We take turns in being the grown up.  LOL  today’s PL Calendar, says it all.

Day 27   Put all your efforts into the NOW.  You can only do your best right this moment, not in the past, not n the future, but now.

perogies 1.24a

Perogies – finally after weeks of thinking about it, I got a package and did them up for lunch.  It has been years and years since I last had Perogies, were they as I remembered them..yes and no.  They did taste of potatoes, and this package said they were filled with 3 kinds of cheese.  All in all it was a good lunch. 4% sour cream, steamed veggies, sprinkled with garlic and seasoning.

Today was about “follow through” tomorrow’s lesson is about living a fulfilled life every day by utilizing things, money , knowledge/energy to their fullest.  Since we got the news that my husband’s illness would be something that we will have to adjust to, we are both working daily to ensure that we stay in a positive, and healthy “mode”.. part of this for both of us, is to remove clutter and negatives, and to rejoice in discovering or rediscovering people and things that we  like/enjoy.

Perogies, is a small something, but an example of wanting the experience again, so I did it.  I have also been diligent in removing items that simply clutter, and no longer hold interest in my day-to-day.  As my husband is fond of saying, “if you do need it, or something like it, you need only go and get whatever it is, when you need it”  It has taken awhile but he has said it often enough that I now “think it” and I am taking action.

It is amazing how much better I feel with each new truck load of merchandise that leaves,  there is still a lot more to de-clutter, but I am making headway.  In doing so, I have rediscovered a new excitement in my creativity, my imagination is able to move at lightening speed when I least expect it to.

Plus I enjoy knowing that someone else will find the crafting tools, etc. that I no longer want and  it will flame their creativity.  What a win, win.

a chop suey day

flowers 4.22.17

A beautiful sunny day after all.  A late start to the day, but once on the road, it was lovely.  The further from the busy pace of the city we got, the calmer I felt. With nothing really planned, it was nice to wander towards where we wanted to visit, but with no real need to be there, we could enjoy the ride.

The fields are bare, barren, trees are waking up, but there are still no buds in sight.  Other years we would have seen some sign of new activity, not so this year.  Low lying fields are damp, wet and in some places completely covered over by water.  I looked for animals, but except for a few sheep, resting in the sunshine on higher ground, there wasn’t much to see.

acrylic spools and needles

I did find a large quantity of a full range of colour in acrylic spools of yarn, and the needles to work with them.  Have I a clue on what to do with them, no.  If anyone out there knows, I’d love to hear from you.  I was smitten by the colours and the prospect of doing something artistic with them.

doll 4.22.17 18 inches VV Kanata

My husband sighed quietly when I climbed back into the truck with my little one… “I thought you said, you weren’t going to start collecting dolls”  the dear man, it wasn’t a question, he shook his head.. He didn’t say it, but he was thinking.. he hoped this phase will be short and sweet,  he really is the VERY BEST. =^_^=

There was much more we explored and experienced, it was simply one of the nicest of days..  I came home content with my “treasures” .. I had done the background for the flowers before we left.  After supper, the flowers magically appeared, it was 1,2,3, et voila, I was smiling.  I liked what I saw. =^_^=

Every day won’t be like today, but the happy days, out number the “gray” days. The minister in NY. wrote that we need to apply ourselves more to “living like the sun” PL Precept # 8.  I agree, and will try hard to practice being more cheerful, and to see the world through fresh eyes every day when I wake.

Happy Sunday everyone.. The forecast calls for blue skies with a lot of sunshine.  Enjoy!

aggh -wot is the problem

acrylic-and-stencil

While my latest card says to Dream and Be Happy… I’m trying to find the balance between discomfort and ”darn that hurts”  It is distracting. On talk show radio today while driving around from errand to errand… (I was being productive) there was a feature on how Emergency rooms are having to deal with dental emergencies, and are not equipped for the problems they are seeing.

It seems there are many people for one reason or another don’t go to a dentist, and then suffer terrible pain at some point when they encounter a severe tooth problem.. ie. they need a root canal etc.  They are in so much pain, the doctor says they can’t answer a question properly the pain has distracted them so much.

As I listened, and wondered, hmmm is the pain subjective?  I myself was caught by a sudden burning sensation in my right ear.  Ooohhhh that hurts as I put my hand up to the ear, trying to sooth it with some warmth from my hand.  Then I remembered that the dentist had told me that I had the equivalent of a sprained ankle in my jaw.. and I was to rest the jaw, not chew down on foods that would stress the jaw.  He said “it is a warning sign” that if I didn’t take care of the situation now.. it could lead to bigger problems.

Even suggested a mouth guard.. yes … a mouth guard… and he gave me an estimate of the cost for such an appliance. Oh dear… I recall making a mental note, to **try to talk less =^_^= **  ** refrain from eating pistachios for a while** and try to eat foods that were easy on the jaw, like soups, etc.    The discomfort was an instant reminder that I have not been following my “good intentions”

Even the finding of great fancy scissors that another crafts person parted with and a wonderful discounted bargain price failed to take my attention away from the “raging” ACHE in my jaw.. which shows itself through the ear.

So.. my obvious lesson today, is to stop being lazy .. and stubborn.. lazy, not taking the time to make and eat homemade soup that is nourishes and soft and easy on the jaw.. stubborn, thinking that I did it for a few days and that was enough, I knew better??? Wot! So if I have a discomfort, whose fault is it??………………….MINE

“Art” books

pages-img

Good morning everyone. these are a few of the books I’m recycling. A few have been worked on more that others.  At this stage, they are really being prepped, or prepared for their days of adventure ahead

Some get collage, on half a page, some a full page, this is a start to revamping them into a collection of ideas, and possibilities.  Each page is a new canvas.  To work on the pages  they have to prepared.  By working this way, one gets to see how the media works on the different qualities of paper used by the book maker.

For example, glossy papers are not handled in the same way as pages from a dictionary or an older book that may have faded yellowed pages, that you want to keep, the page still needs to be prepped but you require a product that enhance and preserve the parts of the page you want to keep.

It took me awhile to begin working with recycled books, I was always taught to treasure a book.  When I saw so many that were simply discarded, slowly my thinking changed.  One of the books in the little grouping was an old library book with the little piece of paper in the back where it would have been stamped in and out by the library staff, and a small pocket for what used to hold the library card info.

The content pages of the book were all detached from the binding, some pages so faded and old they couldn’t be read or handled that much.  When asked what would be done with the book, I was told it would be junked (garbage)  It was a copy of Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Black Arrow.  It had been published in London,W1 by Bancroft Classics, original sale price $1.25

Sorry friends, I bought it and came home with my prize.  I’ve put aside the original text from the books, and reused the cover and spine, adding different card stocks and Kraft papers to build a new body for it.  Not sure yet what I will do with the text pages, but I can use them .. and eventually I will.

pages-nov-2

When I am working on these books, I get to read the pages, and see where the book falls open to.. meaning the previous owner had looked at these pages often, and by the highlighting, they wanted to retain, and learn the lessons, this book provided them.

That quote by Thomas Paine is “Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must undergo the fatigue of supporting it.

The Sophocles quote  ” One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life: that word is Love”

Life is for living, sharing and enjoying. Where a discard book is recycled, it once more shares “itself” with the world.

journals -discovery

book-cover

After a meeting at the church, a friend and I went out to lunch, after all Chinese New Year is happening, and the Mandarin on Hunt Club was having a special Chinese New Year Buffet, offering dim sum, and other special dishes. for the celebration.  Having indulged ourselves in the many dishes, and the array of desserts offered, we headed back to the church so my friend could get her car.

A stop along the way, was for me a small bonanza of free books.  Now that I’m happily working on recycling books, into my own personal versions of “junk journals” I picked out books by size and age. I was not interested in the content but rather the size .. quality of paper was also important but I was going to be using gesso or acrylic paints to change them anyway.

I was particularly drawn to this little 4x 6 book, it was nicely bound and had enough pages for me to get “junk” look to go with my other projects.  I had no intention of doing any work on the books when I got home, I planned on just putting them aside for another day.

PL Precept #7     Everything exists in Relativity

PL Precept #15    All is a Mirror

When I got in, the little book fell to the floor, I bent down to retrieve it and saw handwriting in it.  I glanced at  the writing and realized that it was someone’s journal.  The pages were highlighted, small pencil notations were on almost every second page.  Someone had read and re read the book from cover to cover.  In the back I saw that this particular book was one obtained at a conference on the theme of the book.  There was a page with the 12 steps (12 step program) and a few other pages, with goals and objectives etc.

Needless to say, it was like looking into someone’s private, very private thoughts. The person had even identified the book, in case of loss, name and address labels were prominent on both back and front covers.  The book was not current.  I wondered how it had come to be in a pile of books being given away, left out as garbage at a thrift shop.

book-pages

Without further thought, I found myself searching for papers, cuttings and colours to depersonalize the book, I removed the labels and then began to paint and glue.

Pl Precept # 19   Begin Once you Perceive

The transformation will not happen overnight, these journals take sometimes years to complete.  IF EVER….. that is just the nature of the journals. Unless you are doing a particular theme for a give away, or to share .. They are ongoing projects, and become part of your “personal” inventory of treasures

When I told my friend about the find, she asked if the person had achieved their goal..  I didn’t have the answer, it would have meant that I would have  had to read her/his thoughts and try to know his/her mind.  Some artistic expressions are to share, others… are for one’s own pleasure.

There are printed pages of the book, that I will leave as is, there are thoughts in there that I can reflect on when I visit the journal from time to time.  Like sharing with a friend.

I love sharing with a friend, and today I made a new one.  how beautiful is that.

Sludge

sludge-2

Take a discarded children’s book, or any other book you have or find, and turn it into a working surface to paint, or create a new image on.

sludge-3

As an artist or crafts person, we are often looking for a place to try out different ideas, I first say pages being reconstructed when I saw a junk journal being made.  In the video the artist was taking old flyers and other junk mail and repurposing it into a journal, where she then proceeded to embellish it so that it could be used for  journaling, art ideas, thoughts, project possibilities… every scrap of paper, cardstock was recycled into a work of “personal” art.

The idea of recycling books no longer wanted or enjoyed as they were, struck me as a good one, especially I had books and magazines everywhere that I could use to jump start my imagination.

I found this product, Sludge by Tri Art on the shelves of the local DeSerres Art Supply shop.  Gesso was more expensive,  and the colour selections I had with the Sludge offered a challenge that I wanted to take.  Where at one time I had a brush or palette knife attached to the end of my arms at all time, it has not been the case for many many years.    Now when I enter an Art Supply place.. it is a brand new experience.

In PL, Perfect Liberty, we believe that everyday is a brand new experience.  To an artist of life, it presents us with a brand new canvas.  It is up to us, to be as creative as we can be, to find happiness, and share that happiness with others.

On their label it says.. “be a sludge head” enjoy the satisfaction of helping the environment You can find out more by visiting their website.. http://www.tri-art.ca

times get tough – be creative

P1000267

There are times, when no matter which direction we turn, life throws us a curve.  We can see these times as tough times, or as opportunities to challenge our creativity.  Countless books, and lectures have been given on “how to deal with adversity”.

P1000270

PL Precept #1 – Life is Art

It really truly is.  Each time we’ve driven by this little display in Potsdam, NY, I wonder out loud, what, why, and where, the whole idea came from.  This time, we stopped so I could take some pictures.  The display has been there for some time, flowers are weather faded, and weeds well established.  There is also a similar display in another part of the town.  It is a University/College town, so I’m guessing, that it was some kind of project.  Whatever, it is most fun and interesting.

P1000269

Toilets, flush away waste, bath tubs, wash away daily grim.  At one time, the display would have been fresh and innovative.  Today it is obviously still a source of interest or it wouldn’t be there, taking up such prime real estate.  Some day, perhaps I’ll hear what prompted such a display of tongue in cheek creativity.  Does anyone out there know?

No matter how tough times get, we all have the potential and possibility to achieve something positive.  The whole project here, was about waste being recycled, and what “fun” it is.
