Elusive Blue Jays

Today I tried very hard to patiently wait for the little beggars to light long enough in one place so I could snap a picture. They teased me without mercy .. at both trails that I went to. Thankfully yesterday I received these two fabulous pictures from Kevin. Isn’t the Blue Jay a stunning looking bird.

They must have a sense for what is happening on the ground. My first stop, I was putting out seeds, and rearranging the Suet feeders.. I could see them flying by, and for sure I heard them calling out to each other. It wasn’t until I went back to the car and came back with the peanuts and the black sunflower seeds that the cawing got louder and more insistent.

As soon as I headed back to the car to deposit the containers, they swooped in, landed, collected their treasures and off they went. I wasn’t too concerned I thought I’ll just go back and wait for them to come back. I waited, but they didn’t come back.. not until I gave up and headed back to the car that is.. then I saw the flash of white overhead.. and heard the ohhs and ahhs from the Xcountry skiers who were heading out on the trail.

Good relationships begin by greeting each other. Acts of respect and courtesy are reflections of how much we value others. Make it a point to be the first to greet your family, people at work and around the neighbourhood.

In life we are often faced with having to make a decision, take the turn to the left, follow the road straight ahead or turn right. When faced with such a decision, do you ponder what road to take, or let your instincts guide you? In the wooded area that I was in this morning, when I saw people heading out on their adventure, I noticed that many of them seemed to know just where they wanted to go, what direction to head out on.

Myself, I didn’t venture past where I was tending the feeders. I was intent on waiting for and watching for the blue jays. During my time there, I noticed that when there was little to no activity in the parking lot, the birds would somehow know that there would be no “traffic” and they would dive down, swooping in from the tall tree tops. To experience this I had to practice, standing still. Each time I go, and the more times I practice being still, the easier it is getting for me.

Right now, in many of the churches we can only visit by appointment to ensure social distancing can be maintained. Standing still in the middle of a woodland “space”… is much like the quiet stillness that can envelope you when you are in church. Something magical happens. our sense are fine tuned.

NCC trail #22

may look quiet, but the place is teeming with wildlife

Everywhere, under, in and around the trees, branches, rocks, there was a variety of birds.. and squirrels, there had to have been a “zillion” of them, grays, beige, rusty, tiny, wee ones, medium size, they were so busy gathering seeds and then running to hide them, they ran across your path, behind you, and unless you actually advanced towards them, you were ignored. People sat on fallen logs, benches like the one above, big boulder rocks strategically placed… human visitors have made small wooden shelters almost like teepees under the protection of big evergreens around the trunks of deciduous trees.

The forest floor looks quiet, but just before I stopped to capture the moment, there had been at least 5 squirrels playing hide and seek in this section of the woodlands. next This bird was being camera shy, I did get another picture of her, but this is the one I thought was sooo cute.

She positioned herself behind the branch, but I could still see her looking at me, watching to see what I would do, what direction I would go.

31st end of 2020

Time transports us – the shutter clicks, and captures “FOREVER” moments. The sights and sounds of 2020 will always be special. We learned, we experienced, laughed and cried. Like the incoming tide, it will wash over us, and then drift slowly back out never to return exactly as it was… Starting soon will be a brand new year, with all the joys and opportunities that will come in with the new day, new dawn.

Whatever the Universe brings to our doorstep, we will deal with it. We’ve grown stronger, we’ve survived the challenges of the past year. Best of all, we will do it together.

This little creature was not going to be put off. He/she waited patiently for me to fill the feeder. There was a bit of hesitation at first, but after a moment or two of considering the situation, he/she made his/her decision and with determination, looked me in the eye, said “thank you” and dug in.

We were a smaller crowd, but everyone got their turn

With snow overnight and into the morning, some of the feeders had to cleared of snow, but all in all, there was a happy chirping and flurry of activity as everyone waited for a place at one of the feeders.

There will always be a way. If you persist and be creative without giving up, you will find solutions that you had not considered before.

Sunday 27th

this little guy is smaller, making his way to the suet on the left.

I’m finding great comfort in spending time with the birds. I’ve even got my trunk set up like a cafeteria, every-thing ready for me to access when I get to the feeding areas. Some days it is just too cold to be fiddling with seed bags that are still factory sealed, Or get to the suet blocks that are still in their retail packaging.

I have been eyeing some of the cameras and the special lens attachments that the serious cameramen are toting. So far I’ve only gotten to the stage where I am making enquiries .. and talking to them about their equipment. The reality at the moment is that by the time I get to the feeders, asses what needs to be replaced, fill and relocate feeder trays etc. I’m usually dealing with frozen fingers.

My son was over for lunch the other day, he has been working on his piano, taken it all apart and has been rebuilding it so that it has the sound he is looking for. While I marveled at the pictures he was showing me of his piano in pieces… I spied the above picture. “Oh that, just a shovel guitar I built for someone who wanted one.” Excuse me, a shovel guitar!! I’d never heard of one, later when I was telling one of my friends, he knew all about ‘shovel guitars” it seems they are used in certain kinds of music. the chap who had wanted this one, was going to play the “slide guitar” on it. I thought it very creative.

One is never too old to learn. It is actually amazing what creative minds can do.

Have a wonderful evening.. I’m off to see if I can catch any videos with a shovel guitar being used. I did hear a clip being played on the one shown.. it really did have the sound of a slide guitar!!!

Xmas surprise

Action figure Pennywise from the Stephen King movie It

What a hoot. My whole theme this year was action figures and personalities from the world of adventure and super powers. I had not said a word about what I was doing.. so imagine my surprise and delight when I opened my nephews gift to find Pennywise staring back at me. You all know how in September I start gearing up for my creative month of October.. my FUN month. The unexpected is always such a “wow”.

If Santa came your way overnight, and was anywhere where the rain was, he would have been one wet Santa. The rain princess was not happy about having to perform “off season” her performance, at least here in this area, was full all out staccato, it was as if she said, “you want rain, I’ll give you rain” and then just lashed out.

This morning all is calm, not bright, but quiet and very wet. Still very mild too. What I noticed was that the little evergreen that has been sitting there all summer just “sitting”.. seems to have sprouted approx. 12 inches. I hadn’t noticed before. Could be because much of the accumulated snow has been washed away. Whatever, she looks happier. She obviously loved the rain, its perked her up.

From one happy little tree at our house, to everyone out there who is sharing this moment with us, we wish you a very happy and merry Christmas Day.

“To every cloud there is a silver lining” someone said that.. I believe it to be true.
