Petrie Island

Sometimes, my mind is not always present. This was my first visit to Petrie Island in a long time. I parked and walked across to the inlet, and was startled by a black bird who few right up to me and landed just a heart beat away. He puffed up his chest opened his wings and I was delighted at his welcome, managed to grab a picture, and then took a few more of the water behind him and the activity in the bay. Guess who had not put her memory card back in her camera.

I grabbed for my cell phone but of course, by the time I did all that the bird and his partner were long gone. I continued on the trail chastising myself.. mutter mutter… I did get some pictures with the cell, but the cell is not my Nikon or the Canon .. The two ducks I came across were no interested in me, they basically ignored my presence. I am not standing all that far a way from them when I was taking their pictures.

I will go back. I went out today because the forecast calls for a nice temperature today, and sun, the rest of the week till Friday, is overcast with rain, and in the low 40’s. This was the first time I’ve ever not returned my memory card to the camera when done with the transfer of pictures from the card to my PC. Hopefully it will be my last.

In the summer, this location is full of people enjoying the island and the waters around it. Today it was quiet, there were people but not too many. It was ideal for a relaxing wander … I could hear all kinds of birds over head, but I lack the zoom lenses that my wildlife photographer friends have, so .. I just took my time walking the trail and listened.

meet the robin that walked along with me for part of my journey.

a little treasure

Weak tired and weary, I took to my bed early. The activities of yesterday had drained me physically, and left me wanting to do nothing but take myself to bed. I was almost settled in, when I heard my phone ping. Usually I have it turned off, or down but I hadn’t done it yet. I checked my Instagram since that was the last app I’d used. Walloping kadoodle.. Num had posted these pictures of an ermine he’s spotted in the woods. I was so excited I got up and came into my office to see them on the big screen. I had to write him and congratulate him on his captures. I’ve seen them now a couple of times, they are fast, they move with the speed of light and are so agile and graceful… that he was able to capture this little one with three good pictures .. I was delighted, couldn’t wait to send him a message. Thank you Num you are amazing.

Isn’t she/he just the most darling of creatures. The one I’ve seen has been at Dewberry in the east end, if I recall he found this darling in the west end. I had been heading for Sarsaparilla trail on my way to church but had gotten sidetracked, and ended up at Beaver Trail. Ottawa is a delight for nature & wildlife photographers, we have dozens of woodlands, forests and green spaces within and all around the city.

It’s Okay! God is watching over you. things turn out for the best. Don’t be captured by momentary troubles but continue doing everything with sincerity.

you are NOT scaring me off

This little guy was not going to give, not an inch. fresh sunflower seeds, peanuts .. come on give me a break woman, no way am I going to let you chase me away.

Such was the dialog I had with little ms. uppity here. I had not been to Mer Bleue for a bit, so after Dewberry, I went to see how things were .. I had food for the crows and now I think grackles… Today was the opposite of other times, there were more birds, and a good variety at Mer Bleue… while Dewberry was quiet.

when I was leaving the ground you see here was full of birds, doves, blue jays, black birds, everyone was wanting the fresh seeds.
these two vagabonds were all over the place causing havoc , the one above on the tree, was not with these two.

Day of Appreciation 21st.

I will be forever grateful and thankful for this past winter’s experience of having met up and spent time with the birds at Dewberry and Mer Bleue. They got me up and out every day every single day since last fall, no matter the weather. I enjoyed the fresh air with them, shared in the bluster of the winter winds. In return they allowed me into their space and shared meals with me.. For this I can never repay the joy they brought into my life. I have much to be thankful.

Over the course of the many weeks and days, I met several wonderful new “friends”.. my friends of the forest =^_^=… the few photographers who have graciously allowed me to share their works of art with you, my dear readers.

There will be two services today at the church for the Day of Appreciation ceremonies. 10 a.m. and an evening one at 7 p.m. we ask that you reserve seating for the evening service please. We maintain social distancing, it is important that we all stay safe…. As usual if you are unable to be with us physically, please join us in prayer at 10 a.m. and / or in the evening at 7 PM.

Love YOU, you are in my prayers.. Always!

Saturday 13th

red wing blackbird

Yesterday we had visitors at the feeders. I first caught sight of the red wing blackbird in the morning ..at Dewberry, they were shy, cautious.. staying well off while I refilled the feeders. I was happy to see that the female Grosbeaks that have been there .. were still there, they were patiently waiting .. since I had missed the previous day, they were keen for the sunflower seeds to put out. they didn’t waste anytime getting to the “tables”. It wasn’t long before the happy melodies of contentment was the filling the area.

They were in greater number at Mer Bleue, Kevin who was at the feeders later in the day, saw them too. Don’t know how long they will stay, the milder weather of the past week, brought them to the area. They like marshland which the bog will give them the environment they enjoy, but today the temperatures have dropped. It is around the freezing mark, and it will drop further before the day is out.

We are all wonderful in our own way. Although results are important your effort is what is truly precious.

Evening Grosbeak

While out in the woods today, I fell. I was alone, it was bitterly cold today, there was enough wind to make it cutting if you were not dressed properly, that could be what kept others away, but this morning I had the area to myself. Today I was not far from the parking lot, still it reminded me that I should have had my whistle with me. For some reason this season I have not had a whistle with me, which is something I have always done when out hunting for pictures, especially when in the woods or back country roads on my own. I met Mark when I got to the Mer Bleue trail and asked him if he had a whistle, and no he did not. We chatted on the importance of having a whistle with us… he reminded me to blog about it.. As a wild life/nature photographer he is often way off in the woods on his own, he will pass it on in his blog as well.

Not only wild life, nature photographers go off on their own, I’m sure hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts do also. A whistle is inexpensive and mighty handy if you fall or find yourself “lost” /”confused” in the woods, or anywhere actually. You blow on that whistle, if there is anyone around, they will hear it. I checked on my way home, with both Dollar Tree and Dollarama, neither to my surprise had or sold whistles. I fortunately have several since we always had them with us when we went out, when driving the back roads and exploring off the beaten track. It might be something you would like to consider. For women navigating dark city streets after hours, this is also a handy tool to have handy.

NOW let me tell you about my wonderful “tea party” this morning with my feather friends. I put out my chair and sat, the place was almost empty, I had maybe one or two chickadees but that was it. I just sat .. listening to the trees moaning and groaning as the wind snapped and pushed at them. Then one by one guests arrived. Soon I was surrounded, at one count, I had over 2 dozen Grosbeaks, 6 Blue Jays, 2 male cardinals, 2 female cardinal, 3 downy woodpeckers, a hairy woodpecker and of course the wee ones. We were all happily communing when who should pop up and run up to me and then past me..the little ermine.. only now instead of being all white except for the very light lime green colour on his bottom half, he was almost all that colour.. this is confusing me. I have searched for picture or for info. on why the green tint to his fur.. if anyone knows.. please send me a message.

OK.. that’s it for now. I’m so excited about my visit with the birds this morning.. I need to take a breather, close my eyes and relive the experience.

With the sun shining even brighter these past few days, I did get myself a camp chair, and I did sit in the sun today, basking in the warmth of the sunlight on my face. It was cozy, it was comfortable, I thought I might not enjoy it because the camp chair is one that folds like an umbrella, and isn’t high on my back. Never-the-less.. it was great. I truly enjoyed just sitting there, my coat open, the sun on me… no cares, no worries, just allowing the moment to happen. I parked at the end away from where people were parking to go walk/snowshoe, or X-country .. and away from the feeders. My car is compact, I could park and allow space behind the car for me to sit unnoticed.. facing the field of snow…. and just BE. AWESOME!

this was my personal private scene.

Life is good!

stop the car!

“Stop the car I would holler”.. however now, I am driving alone, so there was no one to alert. I checked my rear view mirror, pulled over, put my hazard lights on, and got out to capture this moment. Gosh snow can be so beautiful, alluring, and captivating. Never mind that just minutes prior to this scene, I had passed a car that had driven off the road into a scene similar to this one, how the driver had managed that I don’t know.. the side road had been plowed. The car had taken a nose dive into the ditch on the opposite side of the road that it had been headed in.

It was a beautiful day, you can see the sky is a lovely shade of blue. Earlier on my way out to the woodlands, I had passed a long stretch of road where all the vegetation was covered in snow and ice. The lighting was such that it looked like silver and gold encrusted on all the shrubs .. but I couldn’t stop, so I told myself I would get it on my way back. We all know that was not going to happen, the hour or so that had elapsed, meant the lighting would be all different, and I would be on the other side of the road. However…. I did get the above capture, and that pleased me.

My crows were not around today, well not all of them, usually they are in the multiple dozens, today there were only about a dozen, and they were quiet, there was none of the hooting and hollering that I am usually greeted with. It was a sunny day, and milder, they obviously had something else to do and were dining elsewhere. It was also quieter in the glen when I got there. There were just too many people, being such a beautiful day, and the lock down lifted, people were itching to be out on their X-country skies and snow shoes.

At Mer Bleue my second stop, it too was quiet, but it has been so, since I think Dewberry draws the enthusiasts that want to have longer trails. Here I got to stand and bask in the sunlight, while the Blue Jays, Evening Grose beaks, nuthatches, and little chickadees happily went about their business. I felt rooted to the spot where I was standing, a couple of times I was used as a spring board .. I didn’t mind.. in fact, secretly I love it. even the squirrel came over to run across my foot.. just because. =^_^=
