-35 degrees

Bitter cold yes… wind chill had it between -38 and -35 depending on who you were listening to on the radio. Did I care.. no… the air was frigid, Time stood still. The birds came to eat, but they were not going to hang around…. I went back to the car to warm my hands before going back to do the suet. I don’t wear gloves, it makes it too awkward to open the suet cages. I brought some lettuce leaves and I had some soya sprouts left over.. I took them further into the bush, closer to a big fallen tree… and half buried it so that rabbit could still find it… I included an offering of rabbit pellet food…. being he/she is wild they may not be interested in the pellets.. but I left them anyway.

When it is as cold as it was, there is a crispness underfoot when you walk over the snow… I could feel the icy fingers of the wind as it found a way to my bare arms under my sweater sleeves. I didn’t have to explain that I wouldn’t be lingering… After putting out the food, and giving the jays extra peanuts… I got back into my car to warm up. I knew I would be stopping to capture the pictures you see above.. the woodlands are so beautiful with the sculptured snow on the out stretched branches.

Winter is a beautiful time of the year, right now the Winterlude festival is on in the city. If you are near, and can make it to where the ice sculptures are… you are in for a treat. It is cold yes, but you can dress warmly, the ice castles and winter ice slides, the skating on the canal, all make for an winter adventure that is exciting and rewarding…, After the fun of exploring all that is being offered .. you can sit with a hot chocolate, or a beaver tail, and simply bask in the wonders of life.

LIFE IS FILLED WITH MOMENTS, SOMETIMES HAPPY AND AT TIMES INCONVENIENT. IT IS IMPORTANT TO FIRST ACCEPT EVERY SITUATION AS IT OCCURS AND TRY TO ACCEPT AND UNDERSTNA IT FOR WHAT IT IS.

Pileated woodpecker

Pileated woodpecker

I was humbled and totally captured by this beautiful bird yesterday. He surprised me by appearing beside me, and I mean beside me… looked me right in the eyes, and actually stayed there long enough for me to re cover my shock at having him so close to me and my face. I was putting out seed along a fallen log for the other birds… he was an arm’s reach from me … we were face to face…

My only thought was … this must be the bird that hung around with me a year or so ago.. he would come and visit, then fly off and I’d hear his knocking…. loud knock knock knock.. on the various trees around.. He hung around maybe a week or two and then he was gone… I’d hear him, but never see him …. He left an impression… but with time.. the moments faded… so much else is happening in the world.

Yesterday when I saw him… the fact that he was so close to me, and stayed close enough to connect with me, brought back that first encounter… I had never seen a pileated up close .. ever… I was used to the Downy and the Hairy fluttering around waiting for the food to be put out… but never had I seen the pileated. What a majestic bird.

I was too taken aback and “in the moment” that getting a picture was just not even in my head. All I could do was look back at him … I might even have gasped… then he flew off calling as he went.

This morning I found the clip by Francois Potvin… I’m sharing it with you. Enjoy.

today

What is it about today’s world. How come we are always taking selfies?

Why would one need a selfie when getting out of the tub? In fact what is the fascination with taking pictures of what we are doing, should we not be out living our lives.. interacting with other people, catching up with friends, making new friends?

I got a message the other day about storage, I realized that I had zillions of pictures… like really.. how many times do I need to see a picture of a tree, and is that the same squirrel I captured with my camera the other day… was I really going to pay to store more pictures that I may or may not ever look at again.???

Really world, time to focus on living what is left of my life. I realize that out of thousands of pictures .. only a few are really important to me.. the rest are an accumulation of moments, that I lived.. and today, this actual moment is the moment I have to deal with NOW. I am going to make a serious attempt to clear out the non essential “stuff”…

How about you? How are you doing today? Have you done something new? Are you planning something or working on something that is exciting for you? Quincy (elder cat) is wanting me to get on with this so I can finish feeding he and Quinn … She has settled in and is now letting us all know.. she is here to stay… by far, she has the loudest purr I’ve ever heard.

Yesterday I put my chair out in the middle of a clump of snow cuz that is where the sun was shining the strongest… and just sat with my eyes closed enjoying the rays… I put on my sound identifier (birds) in ten minutes it had recorded over a dozen birds who serenaded my stolen moments. It was so peaceful, I didn’t want the radio on in the car when I started my drive home.

Please slow down .. make time for YOU … get out and enjoy the world as it unfolds a new season for us to experience ..

If you are going to do it, put your whole heart into it. Your degree of seriousness will affect the outcome. Your daily accumulation of effort towards your goals shows just how serious you are.

fyi. some of the conservation areas are now barred (closed) overnight. Unfortunately the grounds are being used late evenings by people with no respect for property and the wildlife.

Snow

These were taken yesterday, it was balmy, mind you I was bundled up with a very long coat, and Bogs* (boots that are made for Canadian winters, keep the feet warm to -058 degrees.) .. and layered “to the nines”. To do the Bog on days when the winds are whipping over the landscape, can be very refreshing. I enjoyed my walk, there was no one else around, There is something to be said about sitting on a bench in the middle of a snow covered Bog. The birds were huddled in the woods fluffed up, keeping warm. The one squirrel I saw was nuzzled in against a tree in the elbow of another branch. He had no interest in leaving the sheltered nook for a peanut.

When I got to the part of the Bog that leads back to terra firma, the wooden boardwalk that crosses over water, was snow covered, the winds had picked up enough that the dried stalks from the water plants .. whispered and sang as the spirited winds ran through them. Beautiful and serene.

The walk provided me with time for quiet reflection, any sadness was carried away by the breeze. Its cool caress as it gently brushed my cheeks, wiped the silent tears. Nature embraced me with the comfort I needed.

Your smile is what is needed

A smile invites happiness and cheer and is essential to energize others as well as yourself.

Evening Grosbeak

Happiness is… looking up and realizing that there is an Evening Grosbeak looking back at you.

Made my day, I just stopped in my tracks and admired … the delight that filled me was instant I waited all last year for a glimpse of one.. and now.. here it was … the moment of sheer pleasure. Bold as brass, it just looked back to acknowledge my admiration… then went back to his breakfast.

They have dark heads with a bright-yellow stripe over the eye. Females and immatures are mostly gray, with white-and-black wings and a greenish-yellow tinge to the neck and flanks.

terceiro

Good morning, welcome to a small town along the highways as I made my way towards Valleyfield, Quebec.

.I looked up and saw the door leading …out to no where – then I spied this old concrete structure with the wonderful wrap around veranda.. it must have been a great vantage point for the town parades in the days of its past glory. I am thinking it could have been the village general store.., It was a delightful find.

Today’s thought -reflection.

Improve yourself to have a kinder heart

Do what you can to be caring and considerate to make others happy. (PL2021.3)

Here is something else to think about. The other day my neighbour said to me ” soon we won’t be able to enjoy a banana” .. when I Iooked puzzled she said.. “no seeds in the watermelons, no seeds in the bananas, our food is being so manipulated (GMO) there are no seeds to carry on the wonderful fruits and vegetables as we knew them. Sure enough, when I got home, my watermelon, had no seeds, not one. and…. I’m told you have to pick where you get your bananas, they are not always enjoyable to eat (texture)

Thought for today..

Don’t give up! Keep at it until you accomplish what you’ve started. They key to achieving something is to stick to it. If you are able to continue something from start to finish, you will be sure to accomplish it no matter how difficult the task is. (PL2014.5)

Cheers everyone.
