wake up

hospital,Glenn Dale MD

We have all passed old abandoned buildings such as this one.  Even in residentail areas now, you can often find a home that just no one seems to want to live in.  There is a feeling that hangs around the place, making it very uninviting.  A recent experience had me visiting a well known teaching hospital.  From the outside it looks big, modern, and for an institution, one could even push the envelope a little and say … it was welcoming in a cold clinical kind of way.  It seems these days that there is always constrution going on .. trying to make room for the many patients needing beds or care, either In-patient, or out-patient.

hospital NY abandonedThis picture was found on the businessinsider.com  Picture was taken by photographer Christopher Payne when he visited North Brother Island a 13 acres island between   the Bronx and Ricker’s Island, the building was abandoned in 1963.  It had once provided housing for World War II veterans previously it had  been a hospital for those quarantined with contagious diseases…When he  visited Payne had hoped to find buildings completely intact what he found was ruins. He told Business Insider “It looked like it had been abandoned for a century”

Has the world changed .. have you been in a hospital room lately. We don’t often think of hospitals until we end up in one. Trust me, you should be thinking about your life, your health, and how you want to stay healthy and out of a  hospital.  you can go in not feeling too well, and come out even sicker

In every city, small town, even a village, there is a park.  A place to get out and enjoy nature.  At this time of year, if you live in parts of the world where  the fall season is a riot of colour, one of the best medicines, for feeling good, is to get out and enjoy a day in the country, or walking  a park trail  Wake up to the natural wonders we are surrounded by.

NY, central park

NY city .. a city known for its concrete and high density population, yet, it still makes room for places like this. quiet spots where you can escape daily pressures of life.  Such  places are everywhere, even our own backyards.  The trick is to take the time, to enjoy them.  You owe it to yourself, and your loved ones, to stay grounded in nature, to be alive with the joys of life, spurring you on….October is when Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving.  Give appreciation for the bounty of goodness in your life….Believe that abundance is yours. Wake up to possibilities of a healthy life.  Make this Thanksgiving, the first one of many.

I thought of this  quote before I decided to share’ –  I had to ponder if it was true, in my mind, did I think it relevent to what I wanted to say.  I know not everyone likes to dance. But to those of us who do..  who enjoy the passion and exhilaration of being  held and masterfully led through an active art form, or  to simply workout  and exercise  the body.with a partner. It matters if your partner is in harmony with your unspoken rhythm. I liken it to being a passenger on a road bike (motorcycle) how the two bodies have to be in sync for the ride to be smooth and effortless.

See this landscape, the person there, might have thought they were alone, but they weren’t were they, someone took the picture.  Even if they were unaware of the photographer, he/she was there.  We are never really alone, we sometimes feel alone, but the reality there are people all around.  Often like us, just waiting to connect with another human being.

Today I got this picture of the cookie monster.. in yesterday’s blog I used Oscar the grouch for the cookie monster, in sharing his observation, this person connected with me personally, it told me I don’t sit and write here alone in my office, friends read and even if they don’t always write, like or say something… they are there.  We need not chase a dream, the connection between us is in our hearts.  PL Precept #7  Everything exists in Relativity.

3487149b6a71cf52bf62e66957bd4fa8Oh look, there is a cookie monster

looking out at me…

there are days when like this character

my days are filled with too many things that matter

into my office I run

doing my best to forget that beckoning sun

however, the sun shines through the window

and no matter what…. I know

I should make time for some fun in that bright happy sun

But. but…. if I don’t work on my  art now, or at least make a start

tomorrow, there will be that much more

and I will not think that today’s decision was very smart

The open skies beckoned

I wanted to travel to  someplace new

but….. today wasn’t going to be the day to wander

instead I applied myself to the artistic expression that I’ve wanted to share

I spent hours researching and preparing

took time to asses and ponder

did I succeed, I think I did

the cookie monster  held open the can lid

and let the sunshine in =^_^=

half way through the day, I got to visit with a friend

what a pleasure that was

I would have missed that opportunity had I gone out

so you see, there is always a reward and a positive

when we listen with a clear intent

to the little voice inside our head

now cookie monster can close the lid

and I can go to bed.

a memory

Once upon a time, I had a jewelers bench, it was set up for me and the way I worked, a small anvil, vise, my bench block, and a must for me was the fluorescent incandescent bench lamp. I had a big window but it faced south. A northern window would have been preferred since the light would have been more constant.  It is the little things you learn that help long-term in more than one project.  I had a flexible shaft controlled by a foot rheostat.. it was indispensable for the kind of work that interested me, it was suspended over my table so I could easily access it for my various needs.  The different types of chucks available accommodated the various sizes of drills, burs, grinding stones and polishing

To this day I hang a flexible shaft outfit from my office window, over one of my work tables, even though my Foredom gave up the ghost long ago, I still kept all the parts, just in case…   Since I no longer work in precious and semi precious metals, I replaced my need for doing smaller projects with a Dremel.  That I could use when I was sculpting with Apoxie medium, or wood.  I’m an artist with a need to express my visual pieces with depth, and texture that can be and hopefully is tactile.

f80a45444163bf94d2ae351558c995a4

The Foredom was and is probably the tool that I most enjoyed having over the years, I can carve small rocks with the Dremel, and it does do a lot of what I could do with the Foredom, but it is what we get used to and what we use while learning and feeling our way with a new skill that adds to the dimension of our work.  I think so anyway.

Jewelry whether we are making it or wearing it, is an art form.  What we wear, how we wear it, speaks of our way of expressing a visual statement. n’est pas?  Errr no that web piece is not something I would make or wear, but I appreciate the work that went into it, the detail, the patience .. and even more I would applaud the woman or male who would wear it.

“Everything old is new again”  The fashion mags are showing the “Hobo” look,  vintage 70’s Hippie style  jewelry is back. hmmm I  sigh and turn the page, I no longer want to  have the  gold, platinum, best stones, and classic pieces, I never did.. I like my gemstones uncut, and the metal thick and sculpted,   that was the reason I started making my own….. but….. I’m attracted to the semi precious stones that were worn in biblical times, and during wiccan ceremonies.  I prefer pieces that speak to me, because someone wanted to express themselves by doing something different.  Not something that is manufactured and spit out by the gross.

f98f3fddab819c08e6e568c7e80b5808

I’ve taken to searching out thrift shops and pawn shops looking for unique pieces that still have their past owners energy and history on them, so that they have a “voice” that can be heard by the person willing to listen… these are the treasures that I enjoy the most.  LOL this musing all because  I looked at my Dremel this morning, and thought of my long gone Foredom.

I found an amazing piece today, I don’t think a picture would do it justice, but if I find a way to show it to you, I will… meanwhile… thanks for meandering down memory lane with me.  From me to you…

Today was a day for listening.  First at home, then at church, and again at the hospital.  I listened.  My head was filled with words, feelings and thoughts that kept going round and round.  After a brief lunch, I got back in the truck and drove towards the outskirts of the city. Driving for me is therapeutic.

Sometimes like this Japanese ama, I feel like I’m diving for something, and I may or may not find it.  This ama was searching for shellfish off the shores of Japan.(1930’s)  We know there is a message or “something” that we should be “seeing” or grasping….but will it happen…. only time will tell.

Shaolin Kung Fu Student, Henan Province, China, 2004,

Everyone we  meet in life, has a “story”, an interest, hobby, something they enjoy that means something to them. And, everyone, at one time had a family, or someone who gave them birth. They have history, and they live each day making their own way in this world, one moment at a time.  Sometimes it seems endless, and other times, everything just gets lost in limbo, and truth becomes too jumbled too hard to piece together.

The young man I saw this morning, was granted another chance at life, he was aware and in physical pain.  Some times the pain we feel is just so unique it is beyond words.  Yet through the pain, he felt the moment when love touched his weary broken body.

Love is  a powerful medicine, and a divine state of being.

We are all capable of such love, to both give and receive.

Love of life, has to begin with you.

Today was a new beginning.

593bb532d00ba0cecfe4f4224e360966

The man I met this evening, said he wished he could live in the past.

Yet in his reality of the moment, he is an artist who created a world that was of the past, and he had done it well.  His way of dealing with the present is to create a yesterday where others can see how Native American’s lived back in the days of the “wild West”

Interesting how I met with one energy who wanted to escape the past, and in the evening, I was with someone who prefered the past.

Yet both, can only live in the present … in the now…

How lucky was I … that the Universe gave me a  Yin/Yang day.

How was yours?  Life is good, it really really is.

Everyday is a good day, when I get to spend time with you..

When we drove by the Chinese Embassy today, there were bright red lanterns, flowers and decorations everywhere, it seemed so festive.  In China the Mid-Autumn Harvest festival takes place between September and October and commemorates the largest and brightest moon of the season.  It is a big celebration friends and family share moon cakes by the dozen ( see the moon cakes in left hand corner of the picture.)

We all celebrate life in different ways.   Lately the gift of life has played a pivotal part in my life. The energy of another human being provides a shaft of energy that oscillates giving wing to feelings and emotions that have lain dormant or have been simply non-existent.  Can one die and be reborn.  What determines the essence of life, and how it is lived.  We are told that life is the process of being alive, during our day-to-day experiences and challenges.

9944b98b78649f90d497b1b4a6caabe1

Imagine sharing such a moment with another being, the awe, the speechless wonder that such a feeling can be shared, can be realized, and then released. Today, I saw the signs of a celebration, then later in the day, I felt the elation of an explosion of life-giving proportion, so great that it left me in a state of wonder. Surreal?

a wish was granted .

gift of life, Bob Moawad

Thank you, each and every one of you that got in touch with me with your prayers and loving energies.
The doctors advised the parents, that nothing more could be done, that young man’s wish for freedom from the bonds of life were granted.

061760404e43b3893d6e3b2dc007b531

Although I got to spend only a few times with this young man, I always  felt his kindness and soft gentle manner.  He may not have always been so with others, but my meetings with him were always a pleasure. He lost his granfmother a few years back, and his grandfather this past spring, he had a lot of suffering and pain around him.  It is not always easy to remain positive and strong when all around you are others fending off challenges of their own.

d78c878626b4c4cfca9c615d40611fd3

In his silence, he spoke volumes, was anyone listening?   We will never know what his thoughts were the last few minutes of his life, but we will remember the man who was a son, brother, uncle, nephew  and friend to those around him, who loved him then and love him now.

His passing will help others, who are facing doubt and anxieties themselves.  It will encourage those of us who knew this young man, to be more aware of other’s needs, and perhaps help us to be better listeners, even to the silence, the space between the words.

My dear nephew, I missed saying goodbye

you decided to simply leave to seek the freedom you so fiercely sought

I understand, I truly do, now you can be with “Mom and “Dad”

say hi, and let them know we are all coasting along here and doing our best

to not wail and cry that you’ve gone away,

of course, you know we will, cuz you were just that special kind of guy

who knew how to be a gem and a true gentleman, when you wanted of course

For sure I know how much your parents appreciated the help you were

during times when they were just not sure of how they would cope

with the burdens of life, there you were, able to help, and you did

you know now how much you are missed, and how much we do really care

wherever you are, whatever you are doing

be happy, and KNOW you are loved.

my only regret is that somehow we failed to let you know

just how much,

My memory of you will be the  last time we met, as we hugged in our shared momemt

of saying goodbye to “Dad”

You are physically gone, but you will not be forgotten.

Rest In Peace

word so easily flow for me,

yet this evening I am at a loss

I am trying to understand, how one so young can no longer want to live

while we wait, for news, if he will make it through this tragedy

I thank God for my blessings, and for the life I’ve lived

I ask myself, could I have done more

should I have known, were there signs that I missed

no one can know of course, what is really in someone else’s heart

how heavy the burden must have been

how alone he must have felt

now we wait and hope it is not too late.

Please pray for all the quiet souls who suffer in silence

so caught up in our own needs and wants

we sometimes forget to look around

and reach out with kindness

to someone who could use a friend.

I hold you all in my prayers

even though the miles are many and the distance way too far

for me to physically reach out and touch you

know that you never leave my mind.

and to you who is now  clinging to what is left of  your life

I close my eyes and pray with all my might

that the gentle hand of God will do what is right

& allow the blessing of peace this night

once upon a time

3f4b9be46e727343ac3bf8aff83d75a7

There was a time when it took hours to dress, and never would a woman be seen in public without being prroperly attired.

423ed663ee6f6a890b5f7447a549d521

This was an outfit found on a blog, 1910 daywear, high fitted waistline and baptiste blouse. So.. even in the early 1900’s women wore clothes that befitted what was considered proper dress of that period.

f2b228b7747ce77e6a8b9783c69b9749

remember the dresses our parents wore, or that we saw in earlier movies.

This is a Chanel Dress c.1937

I had a conversation the other day with a dear and treasured friend, that sparked a thought, and it carried through, when a Facebook friend commented on a post I had posted about how people kept cool back in the days before air conditioning.

She replied with a comment about how today, the younger people seem to always be on a cellphone.  Actually it is not only the young, many ages have taken to walking around tied to their electronic paraphernalia.

The later in the day I was speaking with someone on Skype and we talked of how “it used to be” when peope really enjoyed “community”

The theme throughout most of the day yesterday seemed to flow always with a touch of melancholy of “what was”  In the evening I met someone whose comment was ” How nice to actually see you, we seem to always be talking in text”  How true, and yes it was nice to see her … actually see her, see her sense of style, her way of presenting her physical self. Then my day today started with a personal message from someone dear to my heart, and once again I was struck by how one person can be perceived so differently, so much so… that if another friend met up with the other, there would be no way of knowing, that it was the same person they were speaking about.

Ok how do I come up with that.. look at the ladies about, and their clothing.. that is what we see, the fashion statement, or the put together look…. we are not really seeing the person that is wearing the outfit.  Today’s world is more open when it comes to fashion..never-the-less…. the person we see decked out in “la mode” of the day.. is not the person who comes home at night, and does what she does best… enjoy/live her private moments…

99724077c260a5f4695cbf5945b0d443

Who we really are, and what is really going on inside our private world, is usually very different from the personna that is seen by friends, family and aquaintences.

Change is the only constant in life, and like the seasons, we are always changing.

Each new day brings a different experience.  With each experience, we learn and grow.

Sometimes we thing we are starting over, but we aren’t, we are only recognzing the signs we missed the first time around.

When you look in the mirror, do you see yourSELF or do you see the face of a person you are not wanting to see.?

I am blessed to be living with a man who loves me… but we both know that there are days he so so much has to work at liking me.

Once upon a time, we lived in a world that did its best to hide much of what it didn’t want to see.. Now we are living during a time when perhaps even now, we hide behind the electronic world.. if you are talking on the phone, doing your e-mails, you don’t have to deal with what is in front of you or in your immediate field of vision.

BE AWARE that today, willl someday be, once upon a time.
